How to Felt the Heart from Wool Yarn - The Valentines Gift

Updated on August 5, 2013

What is needle felting and how to felt wool yarn

Needle Felting or the Dry Felt is one of the art's crafting technique. The technique of sculpting of the fine wool carded fibers by using a special felting needles.Felting needles are needles with triangular shaped and barbed tip.

Stabbing the wool roving with this barbed needle slowly incorporates the top layers of wool fibers inside, forming and entangling them together. This process can result either in creating the wished for firm 3D shape or a piece of fabric which is called the felt. This fabric can be further used for another crafting as sewing etc.

I love Needle Felting. Why?

Felting wool is a fun, enjoyable and creative way to spend free time. It is much easier than crocheting or knitting and above all very relaxing activity. I strongly suggest it to any creative woman, troubled for example by her husband. But please be careful not to stab too fast and furious! These needles can be quite dangerous, as they are very sharp and when you stab your fingers, you will feel it most somewhere in your back.

But as i have mentioned - it is very relaxing craft. Needle felting requires high concentration, therefore any other thoughts and troubles are pushed out of your head for the time being. And it does feel wonderful to start with a fluff of wool and end up with some lovely item. I love watching the transition and being able to create something nice.

By the way ALL THE PHOTOS ARE MINE except for adverts :)

What do I need to felt a Valentine's heart?

Wool, wool roving

To make any Dry Felt project, you need few Basic Materials to start with. In case you have needle felted before, you may ask another question - which material is the best?

For needle felting we need the nice soft Wool Roving of any desired colors. What is a 'wool roving' you may ask. It is a long narrow bundle of wool fibers, made from raw wool yarn by being combed and carded.

One of the best types of wool is Merino wool. It is very fine and soft, two qualities to ensure easy work and smooth finish and feel of your hearts. It is the best wool i have yet tried to work with. It does felt fast, easy and leaves minimum of fibers sticking out of Felted items.

For this project I did choose couple different colors as red, purple, pink and violet. Of course you can go creative and use any color or even mix some to get special designs!

Felting needles and pen needle felting tools

These barbed needles come usually in 5 different sizes: 32G, 36G, 38G, 40G, 42G. 32G being the thickest and 42G being the finest needle. What sizes work the best?

32G - To start with coarse wool shaping

36G - Coarse fibers shaping

38G - Use when your wool item has desired shape or for coarse shaping of smaller items

40G - Detail shaping or creating various details

42G - Fine details and the smooth finish

Be careful as barbed felting needles are very sharp and easy to break if not used carefully.

For the Valentines hearts I have been using only the needles 38G and 42G.

Note Try to stab the wool straight and do not force the needle in the wool. Felting needles are easy to break when not used gently.

Felting foam Pads, Mats and cleaning tools

What pad can you use when felting?

When needle felting, it is important to use some kind of pad or mat to work on. Felting pads are serving for protection of surfaces, your hands and felting needles themselves. It is therefore required you use something firm, but soft at the same time, so the needle can easily felt through your wool roving and not break as it would if you hit solid surface with it.

Some may use special brushed for felting - which is easier to clean of the remaining fibers, but I personally prefer using the foam pad. It is best to use quality and thicker mat, which will give you the needed support and firm but soft layer for your felting. Be also sure not to use / buy too small pad. Get at least 8 x 8 x 2" pad.

There are also many special pad cleaning tools on the market, which allow you to easily remove the remaining fibers of wool. They will come in handy specially if crafting items from various colors.

First steps to felt Valentine's Heart

Let's get started with needle felting

After you chose the color of wool which you want to use for your heart, gently pull the wool roving and tear off the amount you want to be working with. I do not recommend cutting the wool. Even though it may seem faster and easier, you will later find out that the pulled and torn off wool fibers will felt much more naturally without any "rough steps" on your creation.

Now prepare the desired shape - in this case it is a heart shape - by simply layering the wool rowing with your hands and holding it in the shape, so you can start to stab it with the barbed needle. There is a simple rule - Firmer the prepared shape is, the less time it will take you to felt it (not only to hold the desired shape but to be firm too). In this case I found it a bit harder to get a nice heart shape with my hand, so I prepared the fibers more loose and slowly worked my way to make it firm.

Shaping the wool yarn to get Valentines heart

Stab, stab, stab :) but not yourself!

So you have got the approximate shape now? Let's start stabbing. Stab, stab, stab ..... now is your time to relax, completely switch off and just concentrate on the soothing sound and nice feeling when the needle takes the top wool fibers and incorporates them inside of the shaped item. Maybe think of the one you love and whom you want to gift by this heart. If so make sure you stab with love and positive energy :)

Try to make it as evenly as possible and take your time. Concentrate on any "bubbly" and uneven areas.

You may ask when is the right time to change the needle for different sized one. As soon as you feel the needle goes inside the wool harder, change the needle for finer one. And do this until you think your creation had wished for shape and nice smooth surface.

Simple decoration idea - Candle with felted hearts

Go creative and cheerful with hearts

This is just a simple idea how to decorate your room for the Valentine's Day.

Needle felt couple hearts of different sizes and colors and then simply place them in a nice simple bowl or as I have done - put them around a candle to create new decorated romantic look. You can even attach them by using a glue and here you go - a nice and unique gift for your love!

Small but lovely Valentines gift for her

Needle felt a bigger firm heart. You can go playful, mix the colors, add some dots or make the heart special in some other way (for example put a smiley face on it). Then buy or find some spare keyring parts to which you will simply attach the heart and Voila - very sweet handmade love keyring.

You can craft or buy one to gift it for example as a decoration of keys from your flat, which you want to share with your partner from now on ;-)

Love hearts made of wool for your mobile phone

Simple and interesting gift idea

For crafting this decoration / gift, do needle felt couple small hearts of any color. I have threaded them by silver thread and attach them to a small clip on string. Again you can go playful with this idea. Attach three separate ones or use different amount of hearts.

It is up to you, anyhow, it will look cute and unique!

Just make sure your hearts are felted really firmly, so they do not lose their shape - considering they will be hanging threaded on your mobile phone in your bag.

Needle felted heart pendant for necklace

Decorate yourself / your loved one for the Valentines day

Let's create dry felted wool jewelry"Here is an idea for pendant. Needle felt couple hearts of different sizes. Thread them through with silver or see through line. You can get tiny silver pendant ring to attach to it and then just put it on some necklace.

Pendant from wool will look amazing and crafty on a simple thin necklace. You can go big / as on my picture, or small and use just one small heart. Anyhow, it will look at least interesting. You could even match your necklace with simple heart earrings.

Needle Felting Machine Janome FM-725

This machine uses barbed needles to mesh fabrics together. The fibers mingle to create new color and texture combinations that simply cannot be achieved with embroidery, applique, or any other kind of needlework. This needle felting machine does not require thread, a bobbin, or any previous sewing experience.

This is a lovely article. I particularly like learning about the tools used to make these items. I have always wanted to know how to felt. If it's possible, consider including a video of felting in action. It's all very new to me and I would love to see how it is done.
