How To Make A Homemade Yo-Yo with Detailed Instructions

Updated on January 7, 2014

How To Make Your First Homemade Wooden Yo-Yo in a Weekend

Do you enjoy working with your hands and making your own homemade toys, games or craft projects? If you answered yes then you will enjoy reading this lens and possibly making your own homemade wooden yo-yo.

This homemade wooden yo-yo is an easy weekend project that you will enjoy making using your own two hands the same way I did.as a youngster. For the youngster they will need assistance, guidance and supervision from an adult or older sibling that is able to safely handle woodworking hand tools for them.

I can remember the many weekends my Dad and I would get together in his woodworking shop and make a different homemade toy or game that was really cool; including this handmade wooden yo-yo.

The one really nice thing about making your own homemade wooden yo-yo is the fact that when the project is finished you will feel this certain sense of pride and accomplishment inside you. You can also paint and customize the yo-yo to the limits of your imagination for a one-of-a-kind yo-yo that no one else will have. For instance, take a look at the yo-yo in the photo with the painted spiral design on it in different colors. Wouldn't it be fun just to watch the painted spiral on the wooden yo-yo in motion? After concentrating and watching the wooden yo-yo for awhile you would probably find yourself becoming hypnotized along with everyone else!

Weekends Spent in the Woodworking Shop

I had a lot of cool homemade toys and games as a younster and I enjoyed playing with them for hours on end.

I hope you enjoy and have lots of fun making your first homemade wooden yo-yo the same as I did when I was a youngster making my first homemade yo-yo. I know you will get a lot of joy and satisfaction out of playing with your new homemade yo-yo like I did because you personally made your yo-yo.

This is how I started woodworking except I had a teacher and assistance; my Dad. Every weekend was devoted to him and I working together in his woodworking shop since he was a carpenter by trade and his father taught him the trade.

Most of the handmade toys and projects I made were entered into 4H Fairs in the Woodworking Section. Some of the projects took Blue or Red Ribbons, some got Honorable Mention while others did not! However, they were still fun to make with Dad and afterwards play with them for endless hours. Needless to say, I had a lot of cool handmade toys and games growing up as a youngster. However, the one toy I will always remember and played with the most is my first homemade wooden yo-yo.

@lisln: That would be a good choice for a beginner since it has a wider gap for the string to wind up on the axle. The butterfly yo-yo is also a good choice if you want to do string tricks as well. Thanks for the visit and your reply lorlinda as I appreciate it. Have a Great Day!

      DIRECTIONS:

      1) Lay out all of the wooden parts and check them,

      2) Check wooden wheels/dowel rod (axle) for any scratches

      3) Fold sandpaper into fourths and cut into fourths,

      4) Take piece of sandpaper and lightly sand all wooden parts,

      5) Dry fit dowel rod (axle) to one of the large wooden wheels,

      6) Make sure wooden wheel outside edge is flush with end of the dowel rod (axle) end

(See photo), * You can use a flat surface to ensure axle and wooden wheel are flush.

      7) Measure gap space using ruler or tape measure,

      8) Gap between wooden wheels - approx. 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch wide, mark it with a pencil,

      9) Cut dowel 1/2 inch past outside edge of second wheel, mark with pencil,

      10) Dry fit second wooden wheel on dowel rod (axle),

      11) Line up inside edge of wooden wheel to pencil mark,

      12) Mark outside edge of wooden wheel on the dowel rod (axle),

      13) Remove the second wheel from dowel rod (axle),

      14) Take craft saw, or regular fine toothed saw and cut dowel rod (axle) to size,

      15) After cutting dowel rod to length, take sandpaper and smooth the cut end of

      the dowel rod (axle) off,

      16) Dry fit the two wooden wheels on the dowel rod (axle),

      17) Take tack cloth and clean all wooden parts to remove any oils from hands, dust or debris,

      18) Wooden wheels are ready for painting/staining of your choice,

      19) Take 1/2 inch wide painter's tape and tape each end of the dowel rod (axle) to keep the ends from being painted if axle center is to be painted (axle). Center of axle better left unpainted/unstained

      (See * NOTE below),

      20) Take a piece of wire (old clothes hanger) and run through the wooden wheel holes for painting/staining, Another idea is to put the wooden wheels on each end of left over dowel rod and paint them on the dowel rod,

      21) After painting/staining; let dry overnight. Might check periodically to be sure everything is OK.

      * NOTE: Glue will not stick as well to painted surfaces compared to unpainted.

      NEXT DAY:

      1) Check for dryness before removing wooden wheels from the wire hanger (old clothes hanger),

      2) Take tack cloth and wipe all wooden parts clean, paint should be dry,

      3) Time to assemble the yo-yo with dry fitting first,

      4) Remove one wooden wheel from dowel rod (axle),

      5) Place wood glue around the end of the dowel rod (axle),

      6) Replace wooden wheel on end of glued dowel rod (axle),

      7) Make sure outside edge of wooden wheel is lined up flush with the end

      of the dowel rod (axle),

      8) Repeat gluing for second wooden wheel on other end of dowel rod,

      9) Set glued assembled yo-yo aside for the glue to dry, let dry for a few hours,

      10) Glue has dried; time to paint the dowel rod (axle) ends,

      11) Let paint dry on painted dowel rod (axle) ends,

      12) After drying, time to measure and string up the yo-yo for action,

      13) If you have the yo-yo string use it as it is preferred over the twine/sting.

** If not; get ball of twine/string and cut off approx. eight feet.

      14) Double up twine/string with loop above the floor,

      15) To measure the yo-yo string for the proper length, drop the yo-yo to the floor and

the length of yo-yo string should be from the belly-button to the floor.

.16) Cut off excess yo-yo string (twine/string) and tie the two loose ends together,

      17) Take yo-yo and place it in the looped end of the yo-yo string (twine/string),

      18) Twist the twine/ string up so it is tight around the middle of the dowel rod (axle),

      19) Tie a loop in the other end of the twine/string to place on the middle finger of your dominant hand,

      20) Yo-Yo is ready to go. Now is the time to adjust the loop around the dowel rod, (axle) so

the yo-yo can do "The Sleeper" when it reaches the end of the twine/string properly,

      21) Adjust loop by twisting or untwisting the twine/string to desire tightness for doing "The Sleeper",

      22) Yo-Yo is complete and ready for you to start enjoying the yo-yo and put it into action!

      * NOTE: Your wooden yo-yo should look similar to the wooden yo-yo in the photo at the top of this module.

------ HAVE FUN, ENJOY & USE YOUR YO-YO IN A SAFE AND PROPER MANNER! ------

Didn't realize how much it takes to make a yo yo this is really a neat lens. You had to be good at what you did making your own toys and all. I was married to a man who made his own toys too. There is bountiful information here and I imagine it took a lot of work to get this lens put together. @kathysart: Alright kathysart! Happy YO-YO Day! I'm all for that! Not to be bragging; I used to be pretty darn good using the yo-yo. When I was in Jr. High I could do most of the yo-yo tricks and keep up with the best of them. I guess you could say that I did draw some attention once in a while. I still have the "Blue Screamer" that I used in Jr. High in my Treasures From Days Gone By. Yes, I have always enjoyed the yo-yo because you got outside in the fresh air while exercising at the same time. I would like to rejuvenate the yo-yo and see more youngsters play with the yo-yo rather than have them sitting in front of a PC playing video games inside. I enjoyed reading and visiting your lenses and will try to stop by again. Have a Great Day!

Fun lens with lots of information. I think a kid would appreciate a homemade toy so much more, and you featured great yo-yo's to buy as the interest continues. Yo-yo is an involved hobby with the possibility of developing a lot of skill and thus perfecting your fine motor skills. Pinned to my toys board.

Well this is just such a darn cute subject. I see you have a few lenses on yo yos so you must really like them. I remember working hard to be good at them with I was in middle school. Everyone at school had a yo yo and I think I got pretty good. I am guessing you were one of those people that we all just stopped what we were doing to watch though. Thanks for visiting my lenses the other day.. nice comments from you were appreciated. Happy YO YO DAY.. I am declaring it!! Whooot whooot.

@Gypzeerose: Yes, bloomingrose, the yo-yo does help develop fine motor skills as well as getting youngsters away from the PC games and outside in the fresh air perfecting yo-yo tricks. If a youngster applies themselves the yo-yo can be an involved hobby as well as a Sport where Championship Titles can be won. One other aspect that helps develop youngsters fine motor skills is the hobby of Woodworking under adult supervision. I learned to make my first homemade yo-yo when I was in the 4H Club and entered the yo-yo in the Woodworking Division. I couldn't tell who was the proudest; my dad or myself when we both saw the Blue Ribbon laying beside my homemade yo-yo. I just wished I still had my first homemade yo-yo and the Blue Ribbon; too many moves and years! I was really surprised when I read you "Pinned" the lens to your toys board. I do appreciate the Pin and hope it will help the yo-yo make a big comeback and as popular as it was in the 50s to the early 70s. Thank You & Have a Great Day! (^_-)

@lionmom100: Yes, lionmom100, making your own one-of-a-kind homemade yo-yo can be a lot of fun sharing the project with a youngster or giving the yo-yos you made as gifts. Hope you will give the project a try. The lateness of this reply is due to a recent blizzard and a laptop wanting to do its own thing. When I get a reply and visit from someone I normally reply a lot sooner than this. Please excuse. Sorry! (^_-)

After you make your first homemade yo-yo you will want to make more. This reply is late due to a recent blizzard and a laptop that seems to be wanting to do its own thing. I make it a point to reply back to someone who visits my lenses much sooner than this. Please excuse. Sorry! (^_^)

@NibsyNell: Thank You for stopping by and the comment. I appreciate it. I tried to make the instructions as simple and detailed as possible so everyone would be able to understand them. I wanted everyone to be successful in making their first homemade yo-yo so they could enjoy the many hours of fun they will experience playing with the yo-yo. Plus, it is an opportunity for bonding between parent and youngster making a yo-yo together. Who knows; that youngster with a little bit of encouragement and lots of practice might go on and be the next World Champion Yo-Yoer in the future. (^_-)

Anyway, you can still have fun making a homemade yo-yo no matter how old you are and have youngsters or an organization to share it with. Give the yo-yo a try to have fun! (^_-).

@aussiejon: Thank You aussiejon for your reply and comment. Yes, it would be a good project to make a homemade yo-yo with your kids. It would be a great bonding experience plus help teach them basic hand tool use, following instructions, getting the satisfaction of completing the project and to learn how to do some yo-yo tricks from their Dad. They would be all smiles! Yes, I had a few coco cola yo-yos in my collection as well. (^_^)

Great instructions, might have to give this a go with kids (under close supervision of course), I still have a range of Coca-Cola yoyo's from the late 70's, remember doing all the tricks, rock the baby, walk the dog, around the world etc :)
