Mosaic and Mixed Media Arts and Crafts Instructions

As an eight year old I received a mosaic kit for making an art piece of plastic tiles and another kit using beads to sew together. The art technique is as old as the Roman hills, but can be as new as the artist creating for enjoyment, or for making simple utilitarian things like a mosaic table, wall hangings and mosaic stepping stones.

I am learning the mosaic techniques in the local area of Covina, in the San Gabriel Valley, but through the last three years I have branched out in several mixed media projects. The artist offering the guidance is Leanne Turner, a well rounded artist also offering drawing and painting, tile making, glass art, assemblage and mosaic ideas in every medium imaginable. Bring your idea and create in any art media. I am practicing drawing and painting for flat unit origami.

If you are familiar with my art items, you may have guessed my focus is paper. My first project in Leanne's studio was a paper mosaic. She guided me through a painting process that had a unique design all my own developed in only two workshop sessions. This first project was a decoupaged cigar box, a technique I had not any experience with. I already can think of additional uses for my first design idea and applying it to the tea bag folding I have been doing for ten years.

If you are in the San Gabriel Valley area, including San Dimas, La Verne, West Covina, Covina and Pomona, the art space is open to anyone interested in developing their mosaic ideas or any mixed media arts and crafts projects.

The first image here is a simple paper picture covered in broken glass. All the spaces were filled with black grout. Project done. The glass is available in studio. A project can be started on your very first session.

Mosaics Ideas and General Drawing and Painting

The art sessions by Leanne Turner are offered in her studio on Rowland near the Citrus intersection. Easy on and off the 10 Freeway. Leanne also offers guidance in drawing, painting including landscape, still life and portraiture. These are not classes but a DIY space, because some want camaraderie during their creating time. If you can not afford the She Shed this is the next best place.

The address is 159 E. Rowland St. Covina, CA 91723. The studio is the back half of the computer repair store. Once you are familiar with the office building setup, easy and plenty of parking is in the back of the mall.

Another advantage is all your computer repairs can be taken care of by Jim, who operates the computer repair in the front of the office space. There are other advantages to visiting this area of Covina. Across the street in the long time Shoppers Village are three very good eating establishments which include, Old World Deli, Mexican food and the historic cafe on the corner that serves Waffles and Fried Chicken.

Leanne is limiting her gallery and art fair shows in the future and will be concentrating on her studio work and those that request works on an individual basis. For spring of 2016 Leanne is doing a custom designed fireplace in hundreds of handmade and kiln fired pieces.

She has this summer, 2016, completed an outdoor mosaic for the City of Monrovia.

I had a middle school art teacher who had us all help create mosaics to decorate the outside of our school. A fascinating and very satisfying project! There's a lot of precision 9and strength!0 required to cut glass tiles. Fun lens!

I really came to love mosaics when I went to some heritage sites and saw many of the old mosaic pieces.

What a lovely lens! I love mosaic art and it has been a very long time since I dabbled in it yet I have had this nagging desire in the back of my psyche for quite a while now to make that mosaic table I always thought I would get around to! lol... your lens is an inspiration to me to get to that project this summer. btw, my mother still treasures the mosaic hot plate I made for her at Christmastime when I was in the first grade nearly 50 years ago.
