How to Make a Pirates Treasure Chest

Updated on April 19, 2015

Make your own Pirates Treasure Chest

What young buccaneer wouldn't want to own their very own Pirates Chest? Well now they can...

My lense How to Make a Pirates Treasure Chest provides a selection of resources, instructions and printable treasure chests that will help build that chest to hold the young pirates treasures.

I have selected these particular treasure chest designs so that they range from the very simple - great for that impatient pirate and quick to make, through to those that may prove more of a mini project and suit the slightly older young pirate who needs a chest that will hold their treasure securely away from any roaming landlubber...

Being a Pirate

We could be forgiven for thinking that a pirates life was an exciting and joyful one. After all, most films portray pirates as living the high life, drinking rum and visiting exotic places. But the fact is that being a pirate was a hazardous occupation. Even the most famous of pirates had only a few years of activity. Life at sea could be monotonous, with days or weeks of inactivity followed by rough seas and storms. Living conditions on board ships could be quite appalling with shortages of food and hygiene almost non existent. Fights were commonplace and even the smallest of injuries could prove fatal at a time when medical advances were quite primitive. If you were unfortunate enough to be captured, then your fate as a pirate was not a great one, most likely you would have faced the hangman's noose.

You will need: shoe box, foam sheets (brown and yellow), foam glue and pens, gold card, treasure.

How to make this pirates treasure chest easy to follow instructions.

It is commonly understood that Pirates loved treasure and that they would often bury there ill-gotten gains in treasure chests and then bury it somewhere secluded and safe.

But in reality, it more likely that pirates would either squander there loot or take cargo from other ships that they would need. Ships of the day would carry everyday things like food, soap, clothes and it was often these things that pirates would steal.

We all enjoy a good Pirate adventure - and what pirate story would be complete without its reference to pirate plunder and a treasure chest. But did you know that most treasure is actually discovered at the bottom of the sea, and not on land, and certainly not locked away in a treasure chest.
