Craft A Beaded Key Chain For Any Gift Occasion!

Updated on November 7, 2013

Beads & Leather Key Chains ... A Great Little Stocking Stuffer!

For years I've made these key chains to use myself or as gifts. I've even sold a few. The art of the key chains is in the pattern and how many beads you use. You can make them as long or as short as you like. You can use plastic pony beads or use beautiful glass beads that will give your key chain a look of charm and quality.

I like to use leather for the durability when I make them. One of my favorites is to use white leather with turquoise and Garnet beads woven alternately through the pattern. Those colors are very pretty together.

If I am creating key chains as gifts I always think of the favorite color of the person I'm gifting or the color of their vehicle, house or what ever I'm creating the key chain for. I most always get a comment like, "OH I Love these key chains!" Which brings a smile to the persons face and mine as well.

I find this craft fun and a touch of creativity when I make them for gifts.

I use the key chain pictured above for my set of Van keys because I can now find them in my purse ... YAYYY!

Supplies

  • Lacing or leather laces of any color you choose
  • A variety of beads, any color that will string tightly on your lacing
  • key rings both large and small
  • A glue gun is optional
  • A beading tray to keep bead colors separate ( optional but very useful)

Hint

Try using a plastic vegetable tray with separations to keep your beads divided into colors or sizes!

Creating Your Key Chain

If you take a close look at the pictures I uploaded of some key chains I have on hand that I made you will see that they are made with either 2, 3 or 4 strands of leather lacing. The amount of strands you use gives you the width and size of your key chain. You can also cut the length of your leather lacing to whatever length key chain you would like to make. Keep in mind that a little bit of the length will be taken up by sliding the beads up and into place of two strands. So ineffect if you cut a 12 strand of leather lace you will probably end up with approximately a 5 1/2 inch long key chain. Also consider that you will be knotting the end of each strand after you slide the desired amount of beads up on it.

The picture below shows two strands of leather lace with two pony beads slid up to the key ring in which two separate strands of leather have been put over and pulled even in length. The pattern is simple, the next bead is slid upon the two center strands of leather to hold them in place from each of the two original strands, then the next two beads are slid up onto the two outside pieces of leather which hold those together.

If you use more strands of leather then the effect is the same accept it adds more beads to your row. I always taper my bead down to one towards the end and end my key chain with a bead or two or even three with the ends of the lacing tied in a knot to hold my beads on and give it a finished look. You can add a drop of glue to your knots if you like but I've never had my knots come untied.

If you want to get experimental or try something different you can come out with a design similar to the picture at the top of this lens. Which shows a circular braiding and beads slid in between.

So if you like to do crafts or make your own gifts you might want to give beaded key chains a try. They are useful, pretty and I've found that my family and friends really do use them and love them.

Experiment and explore your talents. The sky is the limit on colors, lengths and size...just have some fun!

Gift Idea!

Make a beaded key chain for everyone on your gift list and use them on your packages with your bows for decoration. Another thought is to give a new home owner one at their house warming or maybe that first car owner. Personalizing colors or style is part of the fun!

Beading Can Be Fun - Beading Can Be Therapeutic

It takes planning to make a nice key chain and it also takes hand, eye skills with some thought involved. The gratification of giving such a small token of your thoughts and talents can be rewarding. Especially when you see someone you've gifted one of your key chains using it for a long time.

What a great idea - I love unique keychains and I semi-collect them from places I have visited as souvenirs, but love the idea of making my own as gifts, thanks! Well done!

What a beautiful and yet very useful gift! My stupid keychains keep falling apart, and yours look very durable (especially the ones made from leather). I especially like your instructions for making them which are really clear.
