How to make your own recycled paper in ten easy steps!

Updated on December 2, 2013

Learn how to make your own paper!

Have you ever wondered how they make paper? Has the magical process of making paper been a real mystery to you? Or are you simply looking for some crafty way to make your own paper - to draw, sketch or even write and paint on? Well, if that is the case, my crafty friend, then you have come to the perfect place to learn all about making paper in ten easy steps!

I am Abie Davis and not only am I an avid artist, but I am also an explorer of all things craft and art related. I love creativity and the opportunity to make anything, out of anything! This page is my simple, illustrated guide that will teach you how to create your own paper in ten quick and easy steps!

This art project is perfect for small children as well as adults of all ages!

Have fun making your own style of paper!

In Step One we will begin our exciting project with making two identical frames! Of course you will have to do some woodwork to create these frames, but trust me, this is the most difficult part of making paper – and after this, the frames will always be there to use again and again! Keep in mind that the shape and size of the frame will determine the shape and size of your paper. Ask dad to give you a hand if you aren’t allowed to use his tools!

Do you feel like being creative?

Why not try to change the shape of your frame?

Changing the shape of the frame will change the shape of your paper!

In this step we will have to staple a sheet of wire screen to one of our frames. From this point on we will call this frame with the wire screen our mold. Remember to be very careful when stapling the wire screen! Always ask for permission or the assistance of an adult when you attempt this!

Recycle and restyle with these great ideas!

This is by far my favorite step, as well as the messiest step of them all! You will need to tear up some newspaper (and all your various ingredients) into small pieces and then soak it in a bowl of warm water. After you have done this you should blend and mix the paper until our mixture is creamy and smooth!

Add some liquid detergent to the mixture if you wish to bleach your paper!

Also try adding different papers (printer paper, toilet paper etc) and see what wonderful results you will get!

Remember that using newspaper will make your paper grey!

Learn how to make paper using recycled paper - step by step! - Step Four of making your own paper!

In Step Four we will be placing the mold (that’s the frame with the wire screen), screen side up and place the empty frame (also often called the deckle) on top of it.

Now carefully dip both the frames (one on top of the other) into the bowl of paper pulp and scoop up some of the mixture!

We now have to get rid of some of that excess water! Slowly raise the frames up and allow the water to drain.

Learn how to make paper using recycled paper - step by step! - Step Seven of making your own paper!

In Step Seven we must now slowly and carefully remove the top frame! Lift it up gently!

Adding soft textures like the skin of onions (the flaky dry bit) will give your paper a wonderful texture, something that will surely amaze all of your friends!

Learn how to make paper using recycled paper - step by step! - Step Eight of making your own paper!

We are almost done! In this step, place a cloth or paper towel blotter gently on top of the screen side. Now you must place a piece of cardboard on top of the cloth and then very gently turn the screen, cloth and card- board over.

Using a sponge you must now dry the screen. After you have done that, gently lift the frame with the screen up and your new paper should be left behind on the cloth!

You can use your recycled paper to fold wonderful origami, or even write special messages to your loved ones on it! The possibilities are simply endless!

For the final step we can leave the paper to dry naturally, or if you are like me and can't wait to use your new paper for origami, sketching or simply writing a wonderful letter - ask your mother if you may use her hairdryer and then use it to dry your paper!

Videos of people making their own Paper - Have a look and find some inspiration!

The internet surely is a wide and wonderful place! Here, for instance, I have found some great videos about people making their own paper. Have a look and remember that there isn't any real way to do this - in other word, you are allowed to experiment and play around!

I simply loved making my own paper. The paper that I make ends up being used for origami, sketching and yes - even as silly little letters of appreciation that I send to all my friends and family! What will you be doing with your own recycled paper?

I helped my daughter do this for a science fair project in elementary school. She won 2nd place. This is a good way to recycle pages in old beat up books. Of course, do not use valuable old books.

I have used a simpler method as a kid to make my own paper...but I think it came out too rough. This is a great tutorial I would try with my kid when he gets a little older...Loved the step by step tutorial.
