how to sew a slot seam

This is a simple seam which can be used to great decorative effect on a whole range of projects from garments to home furnishings to accessories.

Steps to sew a slot seam

  1. Cut a straight piece of fabric approximately 2.5cm (1”) wide the same length as your seam and mark the centre line with chalk or with a line of tacking.
  2. On the main body of fabric press under the seams then tack down.
  3. Place the two pieces of the garment onto the strip of fabric ensuring the folded edges run along the centre line marked.
  4. Top stitch 1cm (1/4”) in from folded edges.
  5. Neaten raw edges of fabric using preferred method.
  6. Press for a neat finish.

Note:
The strip of fabric used can be from the same fabric or if you wish to add extra decoration then use a toning or contrasting piece of fabric.
