How to make Fractals

Updated on July 22, 2012

Fractals are beautiful computer generated images

Make your own unique images for use as wallpaper on your computer desktop, as background art on web pages or simply to enjoy.

Fractals are drawn by your computer with a little help from advanced mathematics. The great thing is, you can easily create your own fractals without understanding math. Fractal images can be made by you self by the use of easy-to-use, free computer programs.

This easy guide helps you on your way to fractal heaven.

Fractals - the basics

calculating the image

Fractals are generated by calculating a complex mathematical formula. Each point is checked for how fast it goes to infinity. The result is mapped to a colour, and so the images appear.

The same formular can generate different images depending on the parameters used and the zoom level applied.

There are a lot of different formulas, all giving different, fantastic looking images.

Fractals are rooted in chaos theory, and because of their unpredictable (not really, but they look unpredictable) nature they are great for organic looking artwork and landscapes.

Make your own fractals

Fractal creation is a fun challenge for programmers. So several programs exist to make your own fractals.

See the link list below and try out the different programs. If you don't know where to start, try ChaosPro! It is free, easy to use, and generates many different types of fractals.

Fractal flight

Watch this video zooming in on a fractal. New details and patterns appears as you get closer and closer.

Books on fractals - here is where you can lean even more about these amazing images

Fractals are based in mathematics. So there is of course many books on the subject. Some deal with the theoric background and others just explore the beauty of the images.

Useful links - find more information about fractals on the internet

These links are all about fractals, software and related websites.

Anyone can comment, but please give me a day to approve your comment. :-)

I am a fractalaholic - confess your addiction - or just say hi

@fibonacci1123: Hi, I am sorry but my knowledge of Mac's is close to zero. Keep searching or maybe you can ask the author of the program, you have found?

I love fractals but I'm struggling to find a mac program or software to create these on, and how to use them. I found gnofract 4d, downloaded it but I don't know how to use it or even open it!

Another Program You Can Add To Your List Is Fractron 9000 Also Available For Free At It's A GPU Based Fractal Generator That Uses OpenGL/OpenCL And CUDA To Generate Fractals In Near Real Time.

Since It's Still In Beta It Doesn't Have All The Function Support And Bells And Whistles Like Apophysis But You Can Do A Lot With It; Virtually All OF Fractal Art Compositions Are Done With This Fractal Art Application.

For Those That Are Interested In 3D Fractal Generation They Should Also Look At Incendia And Mandelbulb 3D; Both Which Are Free.

Another Top Notch Fractal Generator Is UltraFractal I've Seen Fractal Artist Create Some Amazing Things With This Application.

Here is another software program: I plan on using it at my site for tree tattoo art or for various natural art designs depicting nature.

Your "Fractals - the basics" is the best blurb I've read so far as to how these amazing things are formed. "The result is mapped to a colour, and so the images appear" this sentence is what I expected was happening in the inner workings of how the color relates to the equation, but I couldn't find anyone to confirm it until now. Thanks.

[in reply to 0ctavias0fferings] A natural explanation can be that many fractal patterns are similar to patterns in nature, and possibly the Paisley patterns are inspired by nature? (I am not really an expert on Paisley patterns).

    • ctavias0ffering1 profile image

I am constantly amazed how similar to ancient weaving and embroidery some fractals are, particularly something like the Paisley pattern which was popular in Victorian times. 5*
