Taking a picture of an aura

This photo shows the soul of a person leaving the body and was captured just at the time of death, using a special camera, and a special photography technique.

It was taken by Russian scientist Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, who is deputy director of Saint-Petersburg Federal Research Institute of Physical Culture. With a research career spanning 30 years, Dr Korotkov has published 200 papers on physics and biology, and holds 17 patents on biophysics inventions.

This type of photography is called eletrophotography which uses gas discharge visualization (GDV) technique.

The photo was timed at the precise moment of astral disembodiment - just at the time of death.

It was taken using a bioelectrographic camera.

Debunking Kirlian Photography: Is this photo real, or a Photoshop trick?

Before I answer this question, let's look at the photography technique involved. The technique used in these photographs (capturing aura) is called Kirlian photography, named after the inventor of the technique, Semyon Kirlian, who discovered it by accident in 1939 (will explain later).

What is Kirlian photography

Russian electrical engineer, Kirlian, discovered the technique by accident in Krasnodar hospital in 1939. He and his wife were standing near a patient who was being treated by high-frequency electric generator.

When the electrodes were near the patient, a glow around the patient became visible to Kirlian.

After coming home, Kirlian repeated the process at home, and noticed the glow, which is now known as an aura of a person.

How did Kirlian produced these photos?

Kirlian put an object (for example a palm, or a coin) on a metal sheet (conductor) and connected another conductor to the hand. A photography film was inserted between the hand and the conductor. When an electric current passed through the conductor, it produced an image of glowing energy around the palm. (See photo.)

He experimented with animate and inanimate objects, with same results. Tree leaves as well as metal coins exuded an aura.

However, probably realising the skepticism that he will be greeted with, he chose to keep the technique under wraps almost until 1958 while his wife and he continued to experiment with it.

How Does electrophotography work

Electrophotography, also known as bioelectrography, relies on a discipline called electromagnetism. It studies the interaction between electromagnetic fields and living beings (biological entities).

The technique is also known as electrography, or corona discharge photography" (CDP).

So how does CDP work?

In simple words, electric current creates magnetic field around it.

This magnetic field causes small particles (electrons and photons) of the nearby object (for example, human body) to move.

The movement causes the gases around those particles to move. This movement is visible in electrophotography as a glow or an aura.

What camera is needed for Kirlian photography?

The technique developed by Kirlian became known as Kirlian photography. However, that technique was very cumbersome.

Dr Korotkov simplied the process by introducing Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique. He even created hardware and software which not only records but also processes and interprets GDV images on a computer.

Process of Kirlian photography

Kirlian photography uses high voltage electric current which passes through a metal conductor which is in contact with film. That's why it is called contact print photography.

So the object to be photograph is in contact with the film on one side, and metal discharge plate on the other side.

When high voltage electric current is applied to the plate momentarily, it creates an 'exposure'.

This exposure causes "corona discharge" between the object and the metal plate. Corona discharge is electrical discharge caused by ionization of fluid surrounding the plate and the object.

The film underneath captures this discharge.

Film can record the light produced by photons around the object.

Uses of Kirlian photography

Kirlian technique is known for aura photography. It is used by the proponents of parapsychology and by psychics to prove the existence of supernatural or the separation of soul from the body.

This claim is debatable (I will get to it in the next section).

But Kirlian photography is not limited to aura. It is also used to create beautiful pictures of many animate and inanimate objects:

  • Kirlian photos of human body
  • Kirlian photos of hair
  • Kirlian photos of food
  • Kirlian photos of coins
  • Kirlian photos of tree leaf

There are many practical uses for Kirlian photography. For example, Poland's Institute of Architecture of Textiles was able to take Kirlian photos using Korotov's GDV camera of people wearing different types of clothes.

The objective of the experiment was to study effects of human contact with different kinds of textiles. The study monitored heart rate, blood pressure and other medical indicators. However, the study did not result in any conclusive findings.

Another experiment, which is more famous, used a picked leaf. Many GDV camera pictures were taken of the leaf over a period of time. When the leaf was green and fresh, the pictures contained vibrant aura. As the leaf deteriorated and weathered, the aura became weaker and weaker. The researchers concluded that the aura is stronger when the leaf is full of life. However, these claims have been countered, and we will see how in the next section.

Kirlian Photography Helps You "SEE" Wireless Network

Kirlian photography has found one more use. British researcher Luis Hernan has found a way to use Kirlian photography to make wireless networks visible to us.

It is quite revealing to see the dense network of wireless signals that surround us. We take the network for granted, but never understand the impact of these electromagnetic fields on our surroundings.

Hernan's device looks for WiFi networks and represents wireless signals in different colors in LED images.

Hernan is currently completing a doctorate with Architecture and Interaction Design Group at Newcastle University in the UK.

Hernan's device contains a long-exposure camera which uses red color to indicate strong signals and blue color for weak signals.

Hernan has even created an Android app for Kirlian photography.

Another inventor, August Hesse, has created Aura Photography, an iOS app for Kirlian photography for iPhones and iPads. However, this is a paid app.

Is there really an aura seen in Kirlian photos?

The scientific research does not support the existence of anything extraordinary in Kirlian photographs.

The aura is explained as merely moisture content which exists around all objects.

Moisture causes corona discharges - more moisture causes more higher corona discharges. Which is why a greener leaf, which contains higher moisture than a dry leaf, exudes brighter and more colorful aura.

Where to buy Kirlian photography camera

As you see in the pictures above, Kirlian photography is not just for experimenting with aura. It also offers a wide range of possibilities for producing beautiful pictures with ordinary objects and in ordinary situations.

Kirlian photography cannot be done with ordinary camera. A special camera designed for Kirlian photography is available in most markets around the world.

There's one available on Amazon (see below). While this camera can be a bit expensive, it is the only device with which you can achieve Kirlian effect, for taking Kirlian photos of food, coins and human body.

The camera available on Amazon is known as Model 4 which offers all functions on the front panel of the camera. Here you will find discharge switch, as well a switch to choose high and low frequency. You can also control frequency with another switch.

The model comes with discharge plate which is found on the left hand side of the device. In fact, discharge plate is the film plate.

Discharge switch releases electrical power to the plate momentarily. The frequency control manages the frequency of electricity supplied to the discharge plate.

However, please note that you need to use the camera in photographic darkroom.
