Rectangle Loom

Free Patterns for the Knifty Knitter Rectangle Loom

You can knit quickly and easily with the Knifty Knitter Rectangle loom. It is designed specifically for making scarves, blankets, and other types of double panel knit that is the same on both sides. It works well with bulky weight yarn, or 2 - 3 worsted weight yarns held together as one. Here are a few free patterns to get your started knitting with the rectangle loom.

Basic Instructions for Using the Rectangle Loom - How to Use the Knifty Knitter Purple Loom by Provo Craft

  1. Secure the yarn to the anchor peg at the end of the loom. It's the one that is perpendicular to the other pegs on the loom and it's on the side. I use a slipknot, but you can simply wrap the yarn around this peg a few times.
  2. Figure 8 wrap the loom. The video below gives detailed instructions on how to do this. When you reach the last peg of the row, loop around this peg only once. Trace the yarn back across the loom just as it flows in the first row to finish row 2.
  3. Knit off by pulling the bottom loop over the top loop. When you are done, you'll have one loop on each peg.
  4. Wrap the loom again, so you have two loops on each peg and knit off again. Continue doing this until you've knitted approximately 5 rows. Release the yarn wrapped around the anchor peg in step 1. Continue to knitting off until your knit has reached the desired length.

Figure 8 Video

The video below is a visual tutorial for the written instructions above. The eight wrap is a common way to make a scarf on the rectangle loom. The cast on, or first row, is simply the eight wrap. I recommend casting off by using a crochet hood as seen in the second video. Simply begin on the side of the loom opposite the working yarn. Pull the loops through each other until you arrive at the working yarn and tie off the scarf. A single crochet stitch can be placed between each loop if the finished edge is too tight without it.
