Make Your Own Lip Gloss

Lip gloss can give your lips shine and color and can protect them from the effects of sun and wind. Lip gloss can taste great too! It's fun and easy to make your own lip gloss. You can make the gloss whatever color and flavor you like, plus you'll know all the ingredients are safe and healthy.

Basic Lip Gloss Recipe

Yes, you can just use a dab of petroleum jelly, but it isn't hard to make a lip gloss that does more than prevent chapped lips. Here's a basic natural lip gloss recipe that feels great on your lips and is great for them.

Ingredients

tablespoons coconut oil

1 tablespoon cocoa butter

2 teaspoons beeswax

10-20 drops jojoba oil

optional - drops of honey or flavoring or vitamin E oil

Recipe

  1. Melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax in a double boiler or over hot water.

  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

  3. Stir in the jojoba oil and any additional ingredients.

  4. Pour the balm into a clean container. Set the lid on top of the container, but slightly ajar to allow any moisture to escape.

  5. Seal the container once the lip balm has cooled/solidified.

Lip Gloss Ingredients

I've listed some ingredients used in lip gloss recipes that are available online. Feel free to add your own recommendations to the list or to vote ingredients up/down.

Super Simple Lip Gloss Recipes

Quick and Easy Recipes for Soft Shiny Lips

These recipes are quick! One quick way to melt the petroleum jelly is to nuke it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Otherwise, you can melt it in a plastic baggie placed in a cup of hot water. Colored Lip Gloss Recipes

Lip Gloss with a Hint of Color

This group of recipes will give you lip gloss that adds color to your lips. You can go with the usual red, pink, coral, brown, or berry colors or you can be adventurous! Actually, you can add a bit of colored lipstick or soft drink mix to any recipe on this page to create colored gloss.

Lipgloss from Your Favorite Lipstick

If you have a lipstick you love, you can make lipgloss from it.

Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon lipstick

1 teaspoon grated beeswax

1/2 teaspoon petroleum jelly

4-6 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

2 drops vitamin E from a vitamin E capsule (optional)

Recipe

Mix the lipstick, beeswax, and petroleum jelly in a small bowl. Melt the ingredients together either by setting this bowl in a larger bowl of very hot water or by microwaving it for a few seconds. Stir in the peppermint oil and vitamin E. Pour the mixture into a lip gloss pot and allow it to cool.

Kool-Aid Lip Gloss

Have you ever colored your lips and tongue blue drinking blue Kool-Aid? This lip gloss works on the same principle, except you may prefer a flavor like strawberry, cherry, or black cherry over the blue color... or not. Have fun! This particular lipgloss is easy and safe enough to let young kids make.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon Kool-Aid or other sweetened instant flavored drink mix (if you use the unsweetened type, then use a lot less and maybe add a bit of honey as a sweetener)

2 tablespoons solid vegetable shortening

Mix the ingredients together and spoon the mixture into a lip gloss pot.

Lip Gloss Made from Roses

What a wonderful way to keep and use roses from a special event! This gloss will bear the color of the dried petals and the scent of roses.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons grated beeswax

1 tablespoon coconut oil

dried rose petals, crushed and ground into a powder

5 drops rose essential oil

You can powder dried rose petals by grinding them with a mortar and pestle or by processing them in a spice mill or coffee grinder. Melt the beeswax and coconut oil together, either in a microwave or over a double boiler. Mix in the rose petals and rose oil. You could add a drop of vitamin E if you like. Pour the mixture into a lip gloss pot and allow it to cool.

Hi. Fantastic lens, I've given it 5 stars. I've just been working alongside Missy Munoz to create an anti-aging product called Rejuvenate: Turn Back The Clock

I like the look of your lens and feel you could be a great JV partner. If you're interested in promoting it then take a look at http://www.turn-back-the-clock.com/partners for details and email me at revitaliseyourhealth@gmail.com for a preview copy.

      Thanks,

@anonymous: I was just thinking how "natural" and safe petroleum jelly and koolaid are.

Do you know petroleum jelly is a by-product of the processing of crude oil into gasoline, plastic, and other crap that is generally accepted as NOT safe for human consumption? Putting it on your lips seems beyond foolish, as this is some of the thinnest skin in your body, in addition to being impossible to avoid ingesting through your mouth. The petroleum industry has fooled us into thinking this garbage is safe to apply to our skin (even babies' bottoms!), because they can't afford to dispose of it responsibly, as the environmental waste it really is. By convincing us it is safe, they can profitably slip it into all kinds of commercial skin care products. Double win for them. Double lose for us.
