Loom Knitting Stitches

Updated on March 28, 2013

Learn the Different Loom Knitting Stitches

You can knit a variety of garments on a loom and can even make different types of stitches on a loom. Loom knitting isn't new. People have been knitting on looms for hundreds of years. Many knitters feel that it is much easier to knit on a loom than it is with needles, making loom knitting a great craft for beginners. You can use the looms (circle looms or long looms) to knit without needles. The looms for knitting consist of pegs and you create various stitches and patterns by wrapping the yarn around the pegs in different ways. Some patterns will have you wrap each peg, some will have you skip some pegs. Some patterns will have you work clockwise, and other patterns will have you work counterclockwise. You will quickly discover that knitting looms are very versatile.

I crochet and am currently learning how to knit on looms. I never could get the hang of knitting with two needles, so looms are a great choice for me. I can knit a garment on a loom and then crochet a decorative edging on it to finish it off. I'm teaching myself to loom knit by reading how to books, blogs, and watching tutorial videos on YouTube. Here I share all the resources I've found helpful as I teach myself all the loom knitting stitches.

The loom knitting tutorial videos, instructional books, and helpful links that you will find here will have you crafting beautiful garments in no time. Learning the different loom knitting stitches will allow you to add variety to your knitting projects.

  • Rib Stitch - Make sure your circle loom has an even number of pegs.

(K1, p1. Repeat until end of row. Repeat Row 1.)

  • Moss Stitch - Also called seed stitch.

    (Round 1: K1, p1, rep to end. Round 2: P1, k1, rep to end)

I am working on Ms. Kitty. She is a really cute cat, basic, but I am stumped when the pattern calls for *K1,k2tog rep from *to end of row. This is a decrease from 30 to 20 stitches. Can someone explain this to me step by step? Thank you.
