Make Your Own Printable Bookmarks

Updated on August 20, 2014

Make Your Own Printable Bookmarks

Dozens of printable bookmarks for kids and adults with a variety of themes: dogs, cats, bears, butterflies, flowers, girly themes, boyish themes, and more. Make your own bookmarks for your own use or to give as a gift.

It's so easy to make your own printable bookmarks if you have a color printer and some card. Download your favorites, print them out, and cut them out. If it is double-sided, stick the two sides together. You can also decorate them with your favorite stickers or dried flowers and leaves etc.

If you would like to make the bookmark stronger, you may want to laminate it. At end of this page I have included some tips for making your own bookmarks and ideas for laminating them. If you like, you can punch a hole in the top and thread a ribbon, tassel, or string through it. Open your book and you're ready for action!

Make these for yourself or for a friend. They make the perfect stocking stuffers, party favors, or little add-on gifts (especially when giving a book as a gift). They are so easy and quick to make, you could always make some to sell at a craft market. Make sure that if you are going to use the printables on this page that you check their terms of use. Many / most of the free ones will be for personal use only. The ones which you purchase from craftsUprint should be suitable to make and then sell.

The bookmarks with the text links are free. The pictured bookmarks are all available to purchase from craftsUprint.

cute puppies magnetic bookmarks

If you're a dog-lover like me, you will love these gorgeous dog bookmarks. The cute dog bookmarks above can be double-sided, meaning you stick the two matching halves together so that it looks good from the front and the back. The dogs' heads which stick out the top of the rectangle may get a little battered, so it may be a good idea to glue a little bit of extra support (eg another strip of cardboard or a wooden popsicle stick) between the two layers before sticking them together.

Corner Page Holders - a bit of a different way to mark your page

The first video gives some instructions for making a corner page holder which fits over the corner of a page. After you have made the basic shape, you can decorate it. The ways you can decorate it are only limited by your imagination (and the ideas you can find on the internet!). The second video gives some ideas for decorating your corner page holder.

Tips for Making Your Bookmark

Tips for making your own bookmarks

To get really bright and vibrant colors on your bookmarks, print them on photo paper. This costs a little more than ordinary paper or card, but the results will amaze you.

I would recommend using a paper trimmer or craft knife and stainless steel ruler to cut along the edges of your bookmarks. Scissors will work, but you won't be able to get the edges as straight.

If your bookmark is double-sided, you will need to stick the two sides together. Either use tape or a small amount of glue. If you use too much glue, you may find the bookmark warps.

When adding extras to the front (or back) of the bookmark, such as dried flowers, gems, stickers, gem brads etc, be careful not to make the bookmark too fat, else it may damage the book it is used in.

Laminating your bookmark will make it sturdier so it should last longer. It will also be more likely to survive getting wet. And if you are punching a hole in the top and tying a ribbon through that hole, any form of laminating will help to prevent the ribbon from pulling and breaking the section above the hole. See below for ideas for laminating your bookmark.

To make your bookmarks look really special, punch a hole in the top. You can do this using a handheld punch or even one of those three hole punches (for binders). Now thread some ribbon, string, lace, leather, or raffia through the hole. You can even tie some beads onto the ends of the ribbon for extra pizazz!

Ideas for laminating your bookmarks

Here are four different methods for "laminating" your bookmarks:

1) The first video shows the whole construction method of making some cute bookmarks (using die cuts). About halfway through the video, the crafter show how she laminates the bookmarks using a laminating machine and placing 4 bookmarks in one laminating sheet. Once they are laminated, she cuts the bookmarks apart.

2) The second video method uses some wide tape

3) The third video method uses laminating sheets with an iron

4) Use contact paper to cover your bookmark (no video for this one)

5) Use bookmark sized laminating pouches (available from Amazon - see below the videos)

Bookmark laminating pouches available in different sizes

If you are making a lot of bookmarks all the one size (say, to sell at a market), a pack of these laminating pouches will make your life so much easier.

All of the laminating pouches I am displaying here are 5 mil thick, but there are other thicknesses (7 mil and 10 mil) available at Amazon. If you want to purchase a thicker pouch, first check that it will not be too thick for your laminator. 5 mil is a good thickness, without being too flimsy or too thick.

Note: some of these boxes contain 100 pouches and some contain 200 pouches

Confessions of a bookaholic

I am a book fanatic. When I managed to earn my first money as a babysitter when I was twelve or thirteen, or so, the first thing I went out and bought was a book (The Treasury of Dogs) and I still own that book today! I have so many books that I even have a separate room used as a library to hold all my books! As a homeshooler, I was able to indulge my hobby of buying books, including many reference books, so that my children would have access to lots of good resources. (Good excuse, heh?) One of my favourite types of shops are bookshops. I do read electronic books, but there's nothing quite like holding a physical book in your hands or being able to flick through a real book, even if it's just to look at the pictures. I usually have several books on the go at any one time and as I type this, I have a pile of books on my desk. I use them for research.

Lately, because I have now finished homeschooling, I have been getting rid of some of my books - some of the text books and some others which I never seem to look at. We brought a whole car-load full of books to a charity shop which sold only books (one of my favourite haunts). But I still have a room full of books. What can I say - they are hard to part with. Many of the books I probably won't be using again since both my children are adults now, but I am still finding it hard to part with those books because maybe my children or someone else may find them useful in the future.

I have mostly non-fiction books, but I do have some fiction books - mostly classic novels or Christian fiction. My books in my library are sorted into topics to make them easier to find. I have sections on art, music, history (sorted into chronological order), geography (sorted by country), science (general, physics, chemistry, biology, human body), craft, health, homeschooling, maths, English, Christian topics, biographies, and more. Hmmm. I reckon I could start my own library!
