Updated on September 21, 2012

Maternity Photography - Requirements

Maternity Photography is an art in photography where the subject of photography is a pregnant woman. Pregnancy is a very proud moment for a woman. Therefore, maternity photography is trying to capture the happiest moments in a picture frame.

You will need the following:

1. Decent camera. (or professional photographer!)

2. Comfortable environment.

3. Some props.

4. Lots of ideas.

5. Oh and don't forget - one pregnant woman.

Advice #1

Photos can tell the happiness of the mother because of her pregnancy!

  1. Get her in the comfortable zone and make her feel sexy
  2. The best time to make pregnancy pictures
  3. Outfits
  4. Simplify
  5. Surroundings
  6. Props to give that extra edge
  7. Camera creativity
  8. Dad
  9. Highlighting relationship
  10. Belly, tummy...bump bump, bump!

Advice #2

BE PATIENT! When a pregnant lady wants to be photographed, you never really know what she's "expecting." She's tired and hormonal and she changes her mind like you'll change camera settings.

Essential maternity photography tips - 1 to 3

  1. Get her in the comfortable zone and make her feel beautiful
    1. Make sure the room is set to a good temperature if you are shooting inside. It's okay to ask if they run a little warmer than usual.
    2. Have some snacks available in case it's a longer shoot. They'll love the thoughtfulness of you being prepared.
    3. Have a comfortable seating to be able to sit if tired.
    4. Pull that beauty out of her. You should be able to say things like: "That's beautiful!" or "Oh that's just LOVELY." "Pregnancy looks good on you girl!" Whatever works!
  2. The best time to make pregnancy pictures
    1. There are some recommendations that you should photo your bump sometime around 28-32 weeks - perfect timing to show off your belly!
  3. Outfits
    1. Comfort and colors are essential in this list! You should mix colors that express their way of living. Yellow, navy, turquoise are always nice colors for pregnant women!
    2. Dresses, long skirts with a fitted tank, accessories like necklaces, and bright colors are nice things to wear because we want to see the bump dressed comfortably.

Advice #3

Numerous women only dream of having photos from the final stages of their pregnancy and it takes a special photographer/artist to be a successful baby and maternity photographer.

Essential maternity photography tips - 4 - 6

  1. Simplify
    1. Pregnant woman doesn't need anything "special" to be present in a photograph to help tell it's story. No matter where you shoot, (studio, home, outside...) you've got to simplify your surroundings. The beauty of a mother anticipating the arrival of her child should be captured in a way that allows the miracle to speak for itself.
  2. Surroundings
    1. There's just something about being outside. Taking natural beauty of a pregnant woman and placing her in the majesty of the great outdoors is simply breathtaking. Shoot with natural light and with a couple of locations in mind either early in the day or closer to sunset to capture the best light possible. Pictures with scenery like a cool warehouse, brick, or cement wall to focus on the baby-to-be
    2. Studio shots can be essential sometimes. Specially because they provide steady, stable environment - they offer privacy if you want to take naked pictures.
    3. Mommy-to-be in her own home. She's comfortable a way that she may not be otherwise. It is always nice for a couple to have a capture that truly shows what their life was like at the time their baby came to be a part of their family.
  3. Props to give that extra edge
    1. You can never have too many ideas here: baby shoes, sonogram, ribbon to tie around belly, sprinkling water and so forth...

Advice #4

Experiment with different angles, lighting, clothing and perspectives.

Essential maternity photography tips - 7 - 9

  1. Camera creativity
    1. Shooting from above flatters the physique. Abstract pictures can bring added artistic value. Different points of view. And more and more. Go crazy here! It will prevent you from shooting the same angle over and over.
  2. Dad
    1. The dad usually gets forgotten. Take some shots which are focused just on him and the emotions he might be feeling about becoming a daddy. Looking at these pictures later on will just bring all emotions from you - love, joy, pride!

Highlighting relationship

  1. Highlight the tender relationship between mom and dad, because bringing a child into the world with someone is arguably love in it's purest form. You can get extra creative with photographs of the family that he/she is about to enter.

Advice #5

Make sure that your wife/girlfriend is involved in the planning stage. Find out the different places where she would like to have the shoot. Some women are comfortable in a studio due to the privacy it brings while others are comfortable doing it outdoors.

My sister had some really revealing pregnancies pictures. My Grandma thought they were "too much" but I thought they were beautiful. My favorite was one she took on a cliff. She was naked and the sun was directly behind her so all you could see was her rounded silhouette. It was truly a breathtaking picture.

"Pull that beauty out of her." I sure like that and the possibilities and you obviously have the experience and expertise to back up your recommendations. My daughter had beautiful pictures taken, including the bump and hubby. Very nicely presented with your own special touches along the way.
