Texting With Noodles

Updated on January 26, 2013

Did you know that a soup bowl can send text messages?

I have recently developed a unique line of "Message In My Soup" merchandise including greeting cards, mugs, shirts, photo bags, and aprons. Messages are spelled out in pictures soup bowls using alphabet noodles. The greeting cards, mugs, and apparel have a fun text with a play on words using "soup" and "pasta". If you want to create your own messages in soup, follow the steps below.

Give Your Secretary Attention

Make Your Own!

The pictures are created by placing about a half of a can of alphabet soup in a shallow baking bowl and clearing the center of the bowl of noodles using a teaspoon. With the teaspoon, collect tomato sauce from the remaining can of noodles and fill in the cleared space so that the bottom of the bowl cannot be seen. Then, tweezers are used to place alphabet noodles in the cleared space to spell out the messages. If the tomato soup is too deep, the alphabet noodles in the message might sink below the surface. If this happens, remove the letters and carefully spoon out some of the soup. Then replace the letters.

Once the message is complete, a tripod and camera, with a macro lens, are used to capture the bowl of soup with the message. I found that using a flash caused bright reflections in the soup, so I took the pictures next to a window and used available light.

@Virginia Allain: Thanks for the comment. I have to do the lettering a little at a time because it is pretty tedious. But I enjoy thinking up new messages and doing them.

@JohnTannahill: You got that right!! ;) I do eat my spinach occasionally. I guess I could spell out vegetables with noodles and get both at the same time.
