Quilter, author, tutor, columnist, Jan T Urquhart Baillie has been enthusing others with her passion for quilting for more than 30 years.

Electric Quilt is not just Electric Quilt!

The Electric Quilt Company from Bowling Green, Ohio, makes many, many quilt related computer programmes, some of which are stand-alone and some of which need EQ to operate.

I have been reviewing computer programmes which are of interest to quilters for almost twenty years. I write about them in my Computer Quilts column in Down Under Quilts magazine.

Let me show you some of my favourites, and how good they are to use in your patchwork and quilting efforts.

Electric Quilt (EQ) has so many facets

You can be a beginner user or a power user, there's plenty for everyone.

When I first started using EQ, I was a raw beginner and now...

Design your own blocks or use some of the 5000+ blocks that arde included with the programme.

One of my very favourite parts of EQ is the quilt layouts that are designed for you as starter designs which I just love to play around with, and to use out of the box.

You can scan your own fabrics so that your designs will look close to the quilt you will make, or use some of the thousands of fabrics that come with the software. These fabrics can be added to with free addons esch month from the EQ website.

I use EQ to design quilts, for my students, for my writing

This design is part of a class, where students learned to design using the Jewel Box block, a traditional patchwork block.

The class was called Jewel Box Quilt Design, and all the block images and the quilt variations were designed in EQ and then exported for use on the web. All without leaving EQ!

What is paper foundation piecing?

A really great way to make complex blocks

Paper foundation piecing is where you print or draw a design in reverse on a piece of paper, and then you sew patches together using the seam lines on the paper to create your patchwork block.

At first I found this really difficult, as it was all "back to front and inside out".

But when I used to have to show people how to use the software, I developed my own method of sewing paper foundation piecing. I call it 'sewing on the line'.

Add-on for Electric Quilt 5 (EQ5) or Electric Quilt 6 (EQ6). This CD includes over 500 kaleidoscope style foundation blocks. Huge variety of styles: stars, compasses, pinwheels, flowers, and more. Easy-to-sew, print any size, these blocks are ready to recolor and set into layouts. Enough blocks for hundreds of projects! Requires EQ5 or EQ6. Made in USA.

I loved the designs and the quilts in this programme.

You can use it in EQ7 too!

Designed in Quilt Design Wizard - very powerful, very simple to use

If you want a programme that is so simple to use, gives you sewing instructions, and has over 200 blocks, look no further than the Quilt Design Wizard.

While you can’t draw your own blocks, or edit any of the library blocks, you have plenty of scope for designing quilts using the blocks that exist in the programme.

When I reviewed this on release, I was very impressed with how much you could do with this software. I would call it entry level quilt software because there are limited features. However, many quilters are happy with an easy to use programme, that is not as complex as its big brother, Electric Quilt.

I give it ☆☆☆☆☆

@ElizabethJeanAl: Log Cabin quilts are one of the most well loved traditional designs out there. Have you decided on a design yet? EQ would help VBG!

I want to make a new quilt for my bed. I made this log cabin quilt years ago and loved it. It wasn't fancy but it was pretty.

      Thanks for sharing,

      Lizzy

My mom's the quilter in the family, but I know what I like and I really like these designs. How fun to be able to make a custom design of your own!
