Now You Can Wear Your Seat Belt Comfortably!

Yesterday, when I showed my new seat belt cushion cover to my friend Heidi, she told me, "Hey, if I had one of those maybe I could stand to wear my seat belt!" I immediately offered it to her to keep.

Years ago I had a purchased seat belt cover and lost it somehow. I am a die-hard seatbelt wearer, I could never go without it... but I do admit the second I get on my street it's off! (m'I bad!) Hey â that seat belt edge digging into the side of my neck constantly is very uncomfortable to say the least! I'm very short, and even on the lowest position my shoulder strap hits me right on the side of the neck. I HATE it!!

Then I had one of those "DOH!" moments. Why not just crochet one for myself! I had a basket of cotton yarns sitting here from another project, and I just started making stripes. In a couple of hours or less, I had a brand new seat belt cushion. Yay!! This is one of those magical times when crochet meets real life need and solves a problem. Love it when that happens!

This pattern is easy enough for a confident beginner but the stripes make it fun enough for anyone. Or make it in your favorite solid color yarn. I recommend the cotton because it tends to be more non-slip than a lot of yarns, and that's what you want in this item. The cotton is also bleachable in the event you spill that latte!

Knitters - you can make this in a rectangle of your favorite stitch too.

If you've always wanted to learn to crochet, I've supplied YouTube tutorials below for right or left handed people. So jump on in!

A Word About Yarn & Thread Selection...

You may use different yarns such as scrap yarns or threads with good results! Just make sure to keep them similar in weight and thickness so as not to throw off the pattern.

NOTE: You can adjust the length of your seat belt cover by adding or subtracting from the number of starting chains. Just make sure you do an odd number and the pattern will work fine.

'm I Bad... But I Have To Tell You This!!

On Friday night, my son and his fiance invited me along with a bunch of other good folks out to the lake for a late-night fishing adventure! At 1:00 AM my friend Heidi was driving me home.

Enroute, an Iowa State Patrol pulled her over for guess what... not wearing her seat belt! Heidi is short like me, and her shoulder harness cuts right into her neck. She told me she simply can't bear to wear it. Her choice cost her a $128 ticket. Obviously I had to make one for her in her favorite colors!

Make It Even Better!

I made this seat belt cover for my friend Heidi over the weekend, and I decided to try hers doing double thickness - two different colors of yarn held together. It turned out even thicker and puffier, and I love it!

A Note From Your Designer...

Hi, I'm SheilaSchnauzies, also published as SheilaSparkles, and my life's passion is designing in Crochet! I also love to share gifts with friends, and this pattern is my gift to you! I give away about 95% of my pattern designs free. The other 5% are sold on my pattern store at to benefit the vet expenses of my Miniature Schnauzer Rescue, Sheila's Schnauzies.

Just one little favor, please... I would appreciate it if you do not post this pattern anywhere on the Internet or in the 'real world.' Instead, you are most welcome to provide a link to this webpage.

I use a system I call the "Official Schnauzer Difficulty Rating" just for fun, to rate the difficulty of my patterns. If it's a 3/5 or more, I'll explain why I consider it more difficult. A few of my designs use techniques that are a bit unconventional! If it's one of those patterns, I'll warn you ahead of time. I do a lot of custom-fit patterns, for example. They are made to fit YOU, not a measurement from a chart. They're surprisingly easy to do and actually end up fitting. That's a good thing, yes?

So glad you found my patterns! I hope you really enjoy making whatever it is you're making! Crochet hugs, -Sheila
