Vintage Home Arts Patterns & Cookbooks

Vintage Home Arts is a website that has a vast selection of vintage and antique knitting patterns and vintage cookbooks. The idea behind the site is to preserve the home arts by locating and republishing rare, out-of-print patterns and instructions. Patterns are selected from a private collection of thousands of original antique and vintage books. They are then cleaned up and republished for today's crafters.

The original antique books have expired copyrights and have fallen into the public domain. People might question if it's legal to reproduce them. Yes, it is. In fact, it makes otherwise lost and forgotten treasures available for use once more. Imagine if the writings of Dickens or the Brontes were never reproduced or republished for today's readers once they had fallen out of copyright.

It can be tricky to work with vintage and antique knitting and crochet patterns. While most of them are easy to understand, some will require adjustments in order to use newer threads and yarns, and a few instructions might sound outdated by today's standards. Just a little research and experience will make the effort well worthwhile.

Many stitchers love the vintage patterns as a way to bring back the past or for funky or retro styles. Others prefer the older patterns, but adapt them to today's current fashions. You can't beat a designer pattern from the 30s, 40s, or 50s. And it's amazing how many people are still making doilies, tablecloths and bedspreads. It's heartening to see these arts preserved through the generations.

Nancy, I'm so glad you wrote a Hub about this so more people will be able to enjoy public domain, vintage books and patterns. Awesome Hub!
