Paint By Number Painting

Updated on October 7, 2014

Paint By Numbers

Paint by numbers pictures have been around since 1951 when the Palmer Paint Company sold the first kits. Max S. Klein was owner of the Detroit, Michigan company, and Dan Robbins, an artist, came up with the idea for paint by number paintings. Most paint by number kits contained scenes like landscapes and seascapes, or clowns or animals as the subject.

This relatively easy painting medium lets beginning artists dabble in painting an entire scene just by following the number-coded canvas. Each number corresponds to a specific paint color.

The amazing work of art pictured here was painted by my brother at least 40 years ago. I can't believe no one else wanted this vintage paint-by-number work of art!

This is the blank canvas of "The Queen."My first attempt at painting in the sky. The directions said to start at the top and paint down, so for once, I'm following directions.I went to Michael's Art and Craft Store the other day and saw this paint by number kit in the clearance bin. $1.49. Score!More sky painted. Painting by numbers is actually sort of hard. It takes more concentration that I expected.A couple of more colors added to the paint by number picture.Nearly done filling in the colors. The completed paint by numbers painting of the Queen Mary. Interesting experience!

Paint By Numbers Featured in Mona Lisa Smile - Do you remember this part of the movie?

In the movie Mona Lisa Smile, Julia Roberts plays Katherine Watson, an art history teacher at Wellesley College in the 1950s.

As part of their curriculum, she has all of her female students paint on a new medium--a paint-by-number painting kit. They paint the same paint by number painting, but the paintings all look different. It's a fun scene from the movie.

I'm sitting here in shock; here's why? I actually had forgotten that I use to do this as a child. It was buried that deep in my subconscious until I saw this lens. I'm mystified. On some personality test a recommendation comes up for "art" and I always wondered why does this come up. Then seeing this reminded me of this; when I was young paint by numbers in Michigan was popular. Can't get over this...

Years ago as a kid, I remember loving it! My Mom who is 86 yrs old mentioned she wanted some paint by number or coloring books for adults. I told her what I found on Squidoo, and it inspired her. She is really sharp and needs some therapy. Any suggestions on which paint by # I should choose for her? TY! and, GREAT LENS! Bookmarked for later ..after I talk to Mom.
