Starting out Glass Painting With the Vitrea 160 Glass Paint Set
Glass painting is great fun and you don't have to be able to draw as there are many free to use coloring pages on-line. You need to start with the simple ones and paint a large picture to start with. Choose something that the lines are widely spaced and link up and that suits your available colors. You simply print off your design and tape it to the back of what you want to paint
A quick overview of what you will need.
To start with you need some paint - Vitrea 160 glass paint comes in 35 colors and the 10 most popular colors are in the sets.
Some brushes the smaller ones are better. (some are included)
Some glass or acetate to paint on.
A palette (included in this set)
A sponge (included in this set)
An out-liner (one pearl one is included)
You also need a hard flat surface to rest on and an idea of something to paint.
The Vitrea 160 Glass Paint Set
This is a good selection of paints and range of colors and a very economical way to buy the paints. The plastic box splits down into two sections and is quite sturdy. Also there is enough room to add some other things as well.
The Glass Paint Qualities
The colors are permanent and microwave safe. They are also UV resistant and Bakeable (only when using glass) in an oven and then dishwasher safe although you do not have to bake them if you are creating cards or do not need dishwasher safe items.
These paints are translucent so the light shines through them. For opaque paints you would need to buy other paints.
Using the Pebeo Glass Paints For Simple Projects
This is just such a cool way to start out on glass curved surfaces. As I said painting on curved surfaces and be awkward but there are some tips here to get some great results right from the start. I haven't tried these yet so am heading out to get some cheap glass. I will post the results later.
The Glass Paint Colors
Colors can be mixed together to get other colors, however this box contains a good range of colors to start with. There are 10 of the most popular colors in the box but if more are needed there are 35 colors in all including some very nice frosted ones.
Frosted Glass Paints
This is a great alternative if you don't want the box and all the accessories as you get 10 colors for half the price. These colors are frosted colors as well so this is something a bit different.
Using the Paints
Vtrea 160 Instructions
I would really recommend that anyone starting out start with a flat surface or picture until they get the hang of the basics. You need to outline your paint and if you are using a liner this takes practice. Well for most people; my sister picked it up straight away but I still get blobs from time to time or my hand shakes. You can see this in the lens photo. So start out flat.
Also if you are using a flat surface you can use a flooding technique (cake designers will love this!) . I have found that staining rather than flooding can be a bit patchy so pens rather than paints might give a better finish to start with. Also pens could be used on curved items.
Save time and money by using acetate craft sheets rather than glass.
If This is for First Time Glass Painters Some Nice to Have Extras May Be Considered
For first time glass painters there are some additional items that may be a great addition for other family members or friends to buy.
You will also need something to paint on. Acetate or similar is a great alternative to glass to practice on as it is cheaper. You can also use ti for cards and window displays.
The set gives you basic brushes, however you will need a selection of small brushes ideally with pointed ends for getting to the edges.
Clear liner comes in the pack but you get through it really quickly. You can get other colors like black, silver and gold etc.
