My Love Affair with Weather

A Photo of My Affair

Open skies are my ticket to nirvana.

Every chance I get I look outside to see what state the sky is in. Clouds are my friends. They float along, dissipate and re-form in response to my peering eyes.

I photograph every chance I get, often snapping glimpses of the changes in weather I see from my apartment windows--both facing north.

My Favorite Weather

Storms of any kind--rain or snow, wind or sleet. But only if I've got a fully stocked kitchen - I can manage without the lights and technology but not the food!

It's not the storm I love so much, although they can be fun to watch and listen to and even write to. It's the state of the weather and clouds after the storm that grabs my imagination.

That's because a good storm, especially one that ends right before evening begins, leaves room for a dramatic sunset with great lighting and puffy, overweight clouds. And here in Albuquerque we get the most marvelous watermelon color that splashed across the mountains at sunset. So great to watch!

I take notice of the sky.

It's fall and my work day comes to an end.

I glance out the window and notice the sky deepening in color and the clouds hanging in formation and moving slowly across the sky.

The street lights have come on, signaling sunset. Although this sunset arrives without the dramatic light we normally get, it still is a point in time when I stop what I am doing and watch until the sun goes down.

Later, that same evening

I watch patiently as the light begins to recede, taking note of each new color of blue that appears.

I wonder how many shades of blue exist in this world of ours?

I love to sit and watch as the clouds and light change across the sky

I can sit for hours at a time to watch the whole evening unfold.

Hours. I am perfectly happy doing so.

Don't need the television or the radio. Although some good music can add to the moment.

The sky deepens further and the dark blue of night begins creeping into my images.

Midnight blue has to be one of the most curious colors ever. Is it blue or black? Or is it blue until it's black and then it become midnight?

Do you have a great memory of a sunset?

I have so many sunset and sunrise memories. :) I love sunrise especially because it tends to be a quieter time of day and I sometimes enjoy the solitude it brings. :) My brother is a weather watcher and has taught me so much. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful memories of sunsets over the Pacific Ocean at Morro Bay, CA back in the 1970s and 1980s. Don't really have any pictures, but wish I did. I am a big fan of changing weather and love looking out the window watching the weather change and the cloud patterns.

My first thought when I looked at the first picture was, "She lives in Albuquerque!" That is a city that has a very specific look, as does Santa Fe. I lived in ABQ for several years, and recall that the weather could (and often did) change dramatically in the course of a day, especially in the summers.
