Updated on December 11, 2015

Pixlr - Online Image and Photo Editor

Pixlr is a suite of tools that combine image design and paint tools with photo editing. So whether you want to create a free form image , layer one image over another or use a variety of filters, effects and level adjustments to transform photographs, Pixlr is equally capable of meeting your needs. Even with all these features, Pixlr remains easy to use - certainly much easier and cheaper than Photoshop.

Pixlr was slowly being relegated to a has been when Autodesk acquired it, updated it and has now grown it to a top-tier suite of free photo editing tools.

Pixlr Desktop allows you to take the web based photo editor offline and work on your PC with three options:

  • Starter - free download, no sign-in

  • Essentials - still free download but by setting up a free account you get extra features

  • Pro - At $14.99 a year you get many more features. Comparable and even a bit better (though they are constantly jockeying for lead) with PicMonkey and Ribbet pro versions.

Pixlr Blending Modes - Unique Pixlr Features

Pixlr presents a full featured photo editor direct in your browser so there are no downloads and the no cost as the editor is free. The editor contains lots of the features that you normally see in desktop applications but in Pixlr and Chrome these features are just one click away.

Some of the tools included are, red eye reduction, spot heal tool, drawing tools, clone tools, sharpen and blur tools. There are also filters such as mimic HDR, glamor glow, tilt-shift, Gaussian blur, vignette and noise. The Adjustments include some advanced concepts like Levels, Curves, Cross process, Desaturate, Auto levels, Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast. Pixlr is capable of opening Photoshop PSD files so you can even use files created in higher end photo tools.

@chezchazz: Gimp is probably the most popular photo editing free download. There are better software programs if you are willing to download and install (Photoshop, Photoshop elements), but they are all much more money than Gimp. If you want to work online, than programs like Pixlr are a better option. I have never been a Gimp fan - but that is pretty much personal as it crashed the few times I tried (this was years ago) and I moved onto other programs. But for a free download - tens of thousands of folks love Gimp.

Liked and featured this page! I added this page to mine here on Squidoo titled "Graphics, Logos, and Dividers" in the featured lenses about halfway down the page.
