Pixlr - Online Image and Photo Editor

Pixlr is a suite of tools that combine image design and paint tools with photo editing. So whether you want to create a free form image , layer one image over another or use a variety of filters, effects and level adjustments to transform photographs, Pixlr is equally capable of meeting your needs. Even with all these features, Pixlr remains easy to use - certainly much easier and cheaper than Photoshop.

Pixlr was slowly being relegated to a has been when Autodesk acquired it, updated it and has now grown it to a top-tier suite of free photo editing tools.

Pixlr Desktop allows you to take the web based photo editor offline and work on your PC with three options:

  • Starter - free download, no sign-in

  • Essentials - still free download but by setting up a free account you get extra features

  • Pro - At $14.99 a year you get many more features. Comparable and even a bit better (though they are constantly jockeying for lead) with PicMonkey and Ribbet pro versions.

Photoshop Express is a web based and free version of Photoshop. Photoshop is the name of a brand though some people think it is a generic term for photo editing.

Sure it's a less featured version of the expensive Photoshop software. That said you won't miss many of the exotic features as this tool is targeted at mainstream consumers, not professionals. Photoshop Express is a free - all it requires is an easy registration.

@chezchazz: Gimp is probably the most popular photo editing free download. There are better software programs if you are willing to download and install (Photoshop, Photoshop elements), but they are all much more money than Gimp. If you want to work online, than programs like Pixlr are a better option. I have never been a Gimp fan - but that is pretty much personal as it crashed the few times I tried (this was years ago) and I moved onto other programs. But for a free download - tens of thousands of folks love Gimp.
