Paper Quilled Greeting Cards Designs
Paper quilling is considered to be a lost renaissance art that is rarely commercialized. About 4 years ago I was simply amazed when an vendor approached me with a small selection of greeting cards. With a small square footage in my store and a theme that consists of home goods and kitchen items I was initially resistant to take a look at the cards and wanted to quickly rush the appointment and quickly place my Jason coasters and placemats order, but as my rep insisted I took a quick peak! History of Paper Quilling
What is paper quilling? Paper quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of thin strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and then glued together to create decorative designs that resembles shapes. The paper is wound around a quill to create a coil shape. The paper coils are then glued at the tip to create a 3 dimensional design and arranged to form flowers, leaves, characters and various ornamental patterns.
The name Quilling is derived from the feather quill, on which the strips of paper were originally rolled to form the coil shapes. Paper Quilling is an ancient art and it first originated in china and it seems to be connected with the invention of paper around 105 AD. Quilling as an art form came of age over five hundred years ago and became very popular then. During the Renaissance, French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. The paper most commonly used was strips of paper trimmed from the gilded edges of books. These gilded paper strips were then rolled to create the quilled shapes. Quilling often imitated the original ironwork of the day and with time became more scarce as other types of less time consuming art forms.
In the 18th century, quilling became again very popular in Europe where "ladies of leisure" practiced the art. Quilling also spread to the Americas and there are a few examples from Colonial times. However with the industrialization and the invention of printed books and cards the Paper quilling art became a hobby amongst few. Today, quilling is seeing resurgence in popularity. The craft has become increasingly popular due to the low cost of the basic material the paper and glue, that is required to make the shapes. It is used to decorate wedding invitations, birth announcements, greeting cards, scrapbook pages, and more, however rarely industrialized since it is still a very time consuming art.
Given the intense detail of the art and the fact that creating paper quilling items takes many labor hours this type of art is rarely commercialized and you cannot find ready made pieces available to buy, mostly tools, kits and supplies. As a store owner always looking for unique thinks I was very happy to find a great source for amazing greeting cards handcrafted using the paper quilling technique and I hope you enjoy checking them out. Do not forget to grab a few as they are very unique and not only can be used as greeting card but they can also be framed as well and used as an art piece.

Handcrafted by Artisans. How Renaissance quilling cards are made
This amazing line of paper quilled greeting cards are designed using the highest quality paper products and handcrafted by artists and artisans in vietnam. The paper is cut into 1/16 inch thin slices of paper and then each single line of paper is rolled into coils, shaped and glued to form different designs. These smaller coil designs are then assembled together and glued to create a new larger figure, design, item, or shape. What is unique to the process is that the paper is not laid flat but is professionally glued and placed on its end to give the cards a 3 dimensional effect. This allows the design to obtain an artistic and handcrafted look that is unique and simply so beautiful..
