Revolution 2020 by Chetan Bhagat

Updated on December 4, 2011

Go through it, because.............

This is fifth novel by one of the most famous Indian novelist Chetan Bhagat. You must read this novel to know about his talent. The theme of the novel is something like 'Two States', only the difference is that i.e. the story of Gopal Mishra.. The story is like any Indian Romantic movie- How Gopal was passionate about her best friend Arti and when he got a chance to marry him; he declined it as he found himself not deserving candidate for her.

Although the novel's title and of course story suggests that it is a revolutionary novel, but you people find it after reading an anti-feminist novel...

Read and find whether the novel is a feather to Chetan's hat or make him down.

Revolution 2020

The Book is called revolutionary by the author, but the story shows the dominance of patriarchy.....

Story of the Novel - Read and Decide

Revolution 2020 is a mainly a love story of a boy named Gopal Mishra. Gopal was a poor boy, his father was very sick and suffering from TB. They did not have enough money for proper treatment. They have 15 acres land on the highway, but was illegally captured by his uncle (Tai ji). A court case was going on that land, but they did not have enough money to fight it.

Gopal was deeply in love with his best friend Aarti Pradhan. They were childhood friend, spend maximum time with each other. Gopal loved Aarti, but Aarti did not have this type of feeling about Gopal. When they turned to 17, Gopal expressed his loved towards Aarti, she refused and said that he was his best friend and she was happy and content in that relationship. Raghav Kashyap was also their friend but not so fast as Aarti and Gopal were. They joined an Engineering Coaching, as both Raghav and Gopal wanted to become an Engineer (although it became clear later both were forced by their parents to join Engineering); Aarti wanted to become Air hostess but for company she joined the coaching. Raghav and Gopal appeared in Engineering examinations, Raghav cleared it, but Gopal did not get good rank, so he had to repeat it again. His father send him Kota for preparation. Although he did not want to go, but because oh his father pressure he went there. Actually he did not want to leave Aarti alone in Varanasi. Finally he moved Kota, got admission in a coaching.

There too, he was busy in thinking about Aarti. Here in Varanasi Aarti got closed with Raghav and they fell in love. Gopal did not sustain it and became alcoholic, left studies and wasted his time. One day, on his birthday Aarti called her and said that she wanted to see him as an Engineer. These words were very special for him, once again he concentrated in his studies. . . He appeared in Engineering Examination once again, this time get better rank, but not sufficient to get admission in Government Engineering College. His father became very upset and died after 3 days of the declaration of the result.

A new turn took in Gopal's life. His father credited two lakhs for his studies and now he has to pay it on behalf of his father. He did not have enough money to eat even. One day he met Sunil in Education Fair, he came to know that Gopal had land on the highway. He got ready to help Gopal on commission basis. He brought him to MLA Shukla. He heard his whole story and got ready to help him. He gave him money and promised him to take land from his uncle. Finally they got land by political pressure from his uncle. They planned to open an Engineering College on that land. A few pages are devoted how Gopal bribed government and bureaucrats for opening the college.

In them meantime, Raghav completed his and decided to join newspaper. On the completion of his, he gave a party and invited Gopal too. Gopal met with Aarti here and she made him realise that she still missed her best friend. They exchanged their number and started talking. As Raghav was busy in his work and care little about Aarti and Gopal was continuously making her realize that he loved her a lot. On the other hand, Aarti's parents were pressurizing her get marry as soon as possible; but Raghav was not ready to marry her this time. And Gopal was ready to marry her whenever she said.

Aarti came near to Gopal, they made love twice, of course Gopal initiated it. Now Aarti started loving Gopal and wanted to marry, and again the novel get a new turn, after having sex with her twice, he realized that he was not good enough for her and plotted a story to divert her affection towards Raghav. He called call girls on his birthday, he knew Aarti will come to meet him. And she came and saw him with these girls. She shattered and ran away from there. Finally Raghav and Aarti got married, and Gopal left alone.. .

The story shows how a boy was passionate about a girl and when he find that now girls is equally in love with him, he left her.. . .. this shows the oldest mentality of patriarchal society.
