School of Art - Learn How to Paint and Draw

Updated on January 17, 2013

Learn How to Draw and Paint at My School of Art

Welcome to my on-line School of Drawing and Painting. I'm a professional artist trained in painting and drawing. I have experience teaching in schools, colleges and centres of adult education and now I run painting holidays in Limousin, South West France.

This virtual school is online, so you can join us to learn to paint and draw wherever you are and whoever you are!

After much thought and procrastination, I've launched my very own School of Art. At last! Unlike other 'How to draw' courses, this is aimed at the serious student - whether amateur or professional, beginner or experienced - the only qualification is that you want to learn to paint and draw, you recognise that this will take time and you're willing to put in a little, (or a lot) of effort.

Having said that, this should be fun. While I've never found art to be relaxing, I've found it to be fascinating, rewarding and all-encompassing. You'll see the whole world differently once you open your eyes.

So, do you want to learn to paint and draw? If the answer is yes, read on .................

The Squidoo School of Art

At last a school of art that you can join on-line. Learn to draw and paint right here and right now.

All content and images, unless otherwise attributed, are the property of Barbara Walton

Welcome to my Online School of Art - Think of this as your reception desk!

Here you are. You've found the school, you've crossed the threshold and you've seen the 'Reception Desk' sign.

This is where you ask your questions, collect a bit of literature, enrolment forms and find out where to go next. We're here to present our raison d'être and to answer your questions about this venture. So what do you want to know?

Keeping in touch - these are the two key sites:

The List Of Lessons This is simply an index of the Projects, lessons and other modules that go to making up this course.

'The Common Room' A facebook group where you can 'meet' others and where I'll be posting links, projects and lessons.

What is this School of Art About?

This is a Serious Art Course

For people who are serious about art

School of Art for the serious student who really wants to strive to learn how to paint and draw and how to improve.

There are plenty of articles and videos out there that will teach you 'how to draw dragons', or give you 'tips on back grounds for water colours'. This is not my approach.

What I envisage here is producing an article each week, (although I can't promise - especially during the summer I'm very busy running Les Trois Chenes!), and each article will represent one week's work for you. I hope that there will be 150 of these, (at least) eventually, and these would represent a three year art course at college.

Now this is very ambitious, so do join and give me a bit of a push and a bit of encouragement.

My aim is to help you to learn to draw and paint. To help you look and see. To help you appreciate good art and to learn from the masters. I was trained classically and hold great store by sound drawing skills and mastery of the media.

Of course, unlike a 'real' art school, there is no pressure of time for you, and no 'standards'. You work at your own pace and you have succeeded if you improve. All the pressure to perform well is on me!

Who Can Join?

Everyone Can Join This School of Art

No qualifications necessary

Yes, anyone can join. Follow the lessons as I produce them. It's ideally suited to students who can't join other courses or who find that local art groups are not challenging enough.

These days it can be difficult to find the time or the money to study full-time. You might be older, house-bound or busy with children or earning a living. There may be no art colleges near you or you might be too shy to attend a class. Whatever the reason, you can learn to paint and draw here with me - in the privacy of your own home.

There's no need to worry about whether you are 'good enough'. It's enough for me that you are keen to work and that you try hard. This is for your benefit alone and you set your own goals. I'm here to encourage and guide. Hopefully we'll find a group of supportive and like-minded students who will make it their duty to support and encourage in their turn.

For tutorials and residential courses, though, you must be over 18 years of age (something about entering into 'contracts'!).

Image: Sketching on the banks of the river Glane at Saint Junien. It's called the "Site de Corot" because the French artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, one of the forerunners of the Impressionists, worked here.

How Much Does it Cost?

The Beauty of this School of Art is that it's Free!

Feel free to follow the course

The course will consist of a series of articles like this one. If you contact me or keep an eye on the index lens, (see below), you simply catch the next one and follow it if you feel like it.

If there's any demand, I'll offer individual on-line tuition, but in this case there would then be a charge for my time.

Image: Students sketching in the church at St Gervais

Who Will Teach Me?

Your Tutor is Barbara Walton

MA Fine Art Edinburgh University

I will teach you. Let me introduce myself ........

I began my painting career officially, when I did a foundation course at York College of art which I followed with a Fine Art Degree at Edinburgh. This was an unusual course as it was split into two parts: the history of art at the University of Edinburgh, and painting and drawing at Edinburgh College of Art. Because the value of the course was the same as if we had studied either course at either institution, it lasted for five wonderful years.

I was then fortunate enough to be able to stay on at the college and complete a post graduate year, which I passed with distinction.

After that I qualifed as a teacher, I worked as a professional artist with a London gallery in Cork Street, taught for a while, was painter in residence in England and Italy, studied landscape design and, finally, I'm running painting holidays in France.

Read more detail in the Curriculum Vitae below:

How Does This Drawing and Painting Course Work?

Follow the Lessons

Learn how to draw and paint

This course is a series of lessons in the form of articles. While some will be sequential, others will stand alone. I'll attempt to cover the kind of curriculum followed in a college of art, so it'll include art history, art appreciation and general background reading as well as studying materials. I'll be producing reading lists and lists of art materials.

Please be a bit patient as I'm working in 'real time', but I'll definitely be giving you something to be getting on with in the next couple of days!

This is the List of Tutorials

The List Of Lessons This is simply an index of the Projects, tutorials and other modules that go to making up this course.

Image: Sketching fungi in the fall on the banks of Videix Lake. Autumn in Limousin can be very beautiful.

Will I Get a Qualification?

No!

This is just between you and me.

I'm passing on my knowledge and you are free to follow as you like. I hope that it'll help you improve your painting and drawing or get together a portfolio for art college. It might even put you in contact with like-minded people, but that's all!

Image: Students skteching in Rochechouart Castle

Can I Meet Other Students?

Yes, I've set up a FaceBook Group

Chat with others who want to learn

Contact other students at this FaceBook Group here BLW School of Art.

This is a closed group, only open to followers of this course, so that you can chat, plot your progress and vent your frustrations.

You can also arrange to come on our art course here at Les Trois Chenes in Limousin S W France.

(For safety reasons I'd always council against giving personal details or arranging to meet strangers from internet encounters no matter how plausible they seem. Never give details of your address, phone, e-mail or bank details).

Tutorials will be available

I intend to hold on-line tutorials soon. There will be a charge for these, but it'll be an individual, one-to-one tutorial. I'm still working out the details of these, but you could express an interest right now! Leave a message for me below:

What a wonderful idea. I have no idea what response you will get, but even if it is slow, I hope you keep adding to it. Sometimes it takes a while to get things off the ground but this sounds like something really worthwhile to a lot of people trying to perfect their skills. You are living a dream life in my opinion. :)

    • BLouw profile image

Barbara Walton 5 years ago from France

@intermarks: Yes, intermarks, it really is free. In effect it is 'just' a series of articles that anyone can open. I hope they'll stand alone, but put together in the correct sequence, they will add up to a 'curriculum' for the school of art. The next two that I have to produce are drawing with a pencil part 2 (I thought I'd start 'achievable' if people have few materials.), a reading list and then, I think, how to use easels. I have suggested that people read basic books like Gombrich's Story of Art, so that should keep you going for a bit!

I have painted on and off for many years, mostly off, but not by choice. Now that I've retired, I'm back to it. I'm self-taught, and while I've turned out a few decent paintings, it's such a struggle. I really feel that I just don't know what I'm doing! I go between several mediums - pastel, charcoal, acrylic, oil, warercolor - I suppose it's no wonder I'm confused! I want to know them all! I look forward to seeing your offerings!

    • BLouw profile image

I must admit that I am exactly like you! I love all these media and in my youth developed a mixed media style that combined drawing and painting on paper and canvas and board - there are rules in art but they are few and far between and for non-professionals the real rule is to just enjoy yourself. I haven't made much progress on my 'art school' recently as I've moved house and have a lot of life changes going on. From a B&B owner I'm now an 'eco builder' (that is what I'd LIKE to be) so have much to do. I will try to keep up the art school as it's such a nice idea to have a professional-type course free online. I do hope you'll keep in touch. Thanks for leaving a comment Louise.

I wonder if I'll get time to get back to my artistic roots when I retire? If I had more time now I would do it now. Great idea though, thanks!

What a wonderful lens! An online art school is a great idea. I'll have to tell my hubby about this one.

@ferginarg lm: Hope I'm still around when you retire. It's hard to follow those artistic leanings in a world that demands regular funds!

@SimplyTonjia: So pleased to meet you on fb. France is pretty beautiful and of course all that wonderful French wine, food, sun and beautiful landscape takes some beating!

@TutorAgency: Well, TutorAgency, the art information I gained through my Art A levels, my one year foundation course at York College of Art, then the five year Fine Art course split between the Edinburgh college of Art (painting and drawing), and the University of Edinburgh, (History of Art), followed by a Post graduate year at Edinburgh College of Art where I gained a distinction in painting and drawing. I then taught in schools and colleges and gained a teaching certificate. I also practiced as a professional artist for many years.

The information about the online school of art I made up. This is my creative idea. I'd like to know more about your agency but your Squidoo profile is a little limited just now.

What a great idea!!! Mum has always wanted to learn how to draw, she has a lot of trouble with perspective. We may just look into this so she can draw me!!!
