Embellishments were added to fill space, but also to pull your eye to other pieces on the page. Scrapbooks tell a story, and you want your reader to pick up as many details as possible.
Ancestry.com is a wonderful tool to use while creating a "Heritage" album. I printed old census, military, and birth records on distressed paper to match my color scheme.
Google is your friend! Don't forget to rummage the internet by searching for details about your ancestors that you know (ie. the name of the high school or college they went to and their full name).
A solid colored page is easy to spruce up with a few additions of a patterned paper. Here, I created an argyle-type feel with a floral print to match the era the photo was taken.
Textured paper adds a new dimension to an otherwise two-dimensional page. Adding pieces of different patterned paper adds a whimsical feel to some lighthearted photos.
Embellishments and a great layout help support the photos that really deserve their own page. Too much fluff will distract from the picture, but a simple frame can do wonders.
