Feature Focus: Sculpting Feet

Updated on October 25, 2016

Improve your ability to portray feet.

Second to hands and the face, feet are one of the areas sculptors often have trouble with. Like hands they are very complex appendages with lots of bones and are very mobile. Learning the anatomical structure of the foot and how it moves is vital to learning to sculpt this feature.

Anatomy of the Foot

In order to sculpt the feet well it's important to have a good knowledge of the underlying anatomy. Setting up a mirror at floor level to study your own feet in various positions can be very useful as well.

Sculpting Feet

Sculpting feet can be difficult and intimidating, the best advice I can give is to take your time, study the hand, and practice. You won't sculpt a perfect foot (or anythign else) the first time or even the second, it takes practice and time to learn.

How to Draw Feet

Drawing, especially from life, helps improve your sculpting abilities. Practice drawing feet, especially anatomy studies. It will help you cement the knowledge in your brain. Plus drawing can be done anywhere, bring a sketch pad with you any place you expect to wait a while and practice sketching. I do this all the time at the doctor's office or the dentist's.

I have never tried sculpting but I can see that feet must be one of the most difficult things to get right.

Hey Twitter-mate! Saw your update there. Great lens, for real. What you do is so skiled - wow, amazing... and cool. I love when people are passionate about what they're into. May not be "my thing" per say, but I can appreciate the passion, y'know? Wishing you the best!
