Seahorse Light Switch Cover

Updated on March 2, 2015

Make Your Own Seahorse

To go with our Ocean theme, we decided to make a cover plate for the light switch, looking like a seahorse. You can choose any design you like, it is really easy to make. Few materials are needed, just a bit of fantasy!

Remember those fantastic days by the sea- with the sun shining and a breeze to keep you cool....collecting shells or making a sandcastle with the kids......all of these memories can be transformed into craft, making the winter less long and cold.

Did you know that it is the male seahorse who gets pregnant, carrying the babies in a brood pouch?

Seahorse Craft Step 1

To start with, draw a seahorse on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Since you are going to paint it, you can use an old cornflakes or shoe box.

Seahorse Craft Step 2

Color the seahorse, using your imagination. If the theme in the room is pink- go for it! If you are a lover of purple and red- why not? Let the children use their fantasy and color the sea horse in some pretty colors.

Facts About Seahorses

- Monogamous- stick to one partner all their lives.

- Size from 0.6-14 inches (1.5-35cm)

- The female deposits her eggs in the male's brood pouch. He fertilizes them internally and carry them until fully hatched.

- Seahorses are not very good swimmers, due to their body shape. This makes them vulnerable, for example during heavy storms.

- They eat constantly and can consume 3,000 or more brine shrimp in a day.

"Human development has destroyed a large portion of their natural habitats around the world, and fisheries harvest, based primarily on folk medicinal uses and souvenir production (the dried carcasses are sold as souvenirs..) results in a kill of 200,000,000 seahorses each year......
