Sell Your Digital Photos : Making money with stuff you already have 1

Updated on December 14, 2013

Sell Your Digital Photos : Make some extra cash with things you already have!

I am sure I am not the only one who needs a few extra

dollars at the moment, so here are some ways I have

found and use to make some extra dough -

hope they help you too! :) xx

Image: How easy is it?

I took a photo of my chookie, now

her photo is making me money!

You already have 1,000s of Digital Photos - Make money from them!

Sell photos you already have

Sell your photos

If you have a digital camera that is 3megapixels or greater

you have a fantastic extra source of income right there!

Graphic Designers + Companies need photos,

for their websites, ads you name it.

And they need photos of simply EVERYTHING!

For example, when I created my sisters website I used photos

of Crayons, a typewriter, a wedding ring, a pair of chopsticks,

an old phone, kids blowing bubbles, a pair of old shoes, just to name a few...

So how does this make you money?

And what does it cost me? (Answer: NOTHING, ever! )

There are websites selling things called PHOTO STOCK -

you upload your fabulous images of whatever you have

found laying around the house and they sell them to

companies and graphic designers who use them in print.

The best bit is you get 50%-80% of whatever they sell your photo for, and your photo can be sold over and over again!

And it is FREE - you dont pay anything, ever - you don't have anything to lose.

The best photos can sell a couple of hundred times a month.

AND YOU GET TO KEEP THE COPYRIGHT for the image!!

So - how rich am I going to get?

Exactly how much

You're not going to get rich - sorry.

But it can give you an extra $50, $100, $200 a month -

for very little work (which sure would help me out!)

Usual rates are about from $0.89 - $3.89 every time your photo sells

so even if you sold that image twenty times in one month at the lowest rate

you would get $17.80 its ok, but not going to make you rich....

Ok, so now you upload 10 photos that sell twenty times a month...

now you have an extra $178.oo a month - that could sure help out, right? :)

What about 100 photos ... woah ... get the picture? :)

[oops - haha, pun not intended]

Here's how to do it!

What are you waiting for?

1.) Go to DREAMSTIME and JOIN UP FOR FREE NOW

2.) Make sure you enter all the correct details because you cant change them once you start uploading photos (trust me on this ;) )

3.) Go to: Management Area>FAQ (down the bottom)>Contributor related questions

And read all about the types of photos they like to accept

4.) Upload your awesome photos making sure you strictly follow the rules:

Only JPG files, RGB, at least 3 Megapixels, saved at the maximum quality will be accepted.

5.) If you use photos that have people in them you have to get a model release form,

don't freak out, they have the forms, print em out, scan em in and you're done

---> MY HINT WOULD BE USE PHOTOS WITHOUT PEOPLE TO BEGIN WITH<---

6.) Go out and take more photos while you are waiting for your photos to get accepted!

A real life person checks every single photo, so it can take 1-2 days

7.) Recommend your friends and family to do the same and earn an extra bit of money

that way too (like what I am doing here). Make sure you get the special website referral address:

Go to: Management area>Referral program

Otherwise you wont get credit for recommending them.

DO NOT SPAM PEOPLE, No one likes a spammer, and dreamstime will kick you off

(And your friends will hate you)

8.) Send me lots of lovely messages telling me how much you love me

now you can afford: that new Twilight boxset DVD / to pay your phone bill / to fly to melbourne

8.) Read my super dooper photo tips (below)!!!

Super Duper Photo Tips

Super Duper Photo Tip #1

Tripod is your new Best Friend

Use a TRIPOD

They usually wont accept fuzzy images

(unless it is on purpose - like a ferris wheel turning or something)

If you don't have a tripod, put your camera on a stack of books -

I use the steps of a ladder when I don't have mine handy.

Anything stable.

Anything at all.

Just do it.

Super Duper Photo Tip #2

Isolate your images

Take photos of things by themselves on a white background

Graphic designers love images they can integrate into something else.

You need: a (clean) white sheet,

a couple of desk lamps

and some items you want to take photos of.

Push a table against a wall, tape the sheet to the wall letting it go over the table.

SO now you have a white background, and a white base.

Put your object towards the back of the table on the white sheet, put the two desk

lamps on the corners of the front of the table, facing the object. (So there are no shadows)

If you have globes that throw white rather than yellowy they are better.

Now...TURN OFF YOUR FREAKING FLASH. Snap away! :)

If you have the skill, go into paint shop, photoshop, whatever and delete the white background and replace it with, you guessed it, white.

If you are shooting a white object, choose a different coloured sheet.

HINT: CHECK REFLECTIONS if you are shooting reflective objects

Super Duper Photo Tip #3

Never Give Up

TRY, try, try again

So your photo isn't selling - so take some more!

So your photo wasn't accepted, submit more!

You will get there, and you will get better - just do it!

Here are some hot tips for photos that sell...

Ideas - 3 Hot Tips!

HOT TIP #1

Follow the news - Take Current Photos

What I do is look what is current in the news and take images accordingly.

The kinds of people that buy these images are: news websites, blogs and tv shows, etc

Yes, the best, popular blogs BUY their images.

They can't just flog them off google images like everyone else -

they would get fined. Who knew? ;)

CURRENT EXAMPLE: SWINE FLU!!!

Take photos of:

Boxes of tissues,

People rugged up with red noses,

Thermometers,

Tissues screwed up in a big pile in a wastebasket,

Surgical masks (and people wearing them)

Pigs... get the idea? :)

HOT TIP #2

Take Seasonal Photos

Take seasonal photos...

Summer?

Fishing

Surfboards

Beaches

Sunscreen

Tubes of zinc

Writing in the sand

Butterflies

November, December?

Santa hats, christmas baubles, christmas trees, palm trees with tinsle,

stockings, wrapped presents...

Easter?

Chickens, eggs, chocolate, rabbits, bunny ears, baskets with ribbon...

Go wild! Remember, these types of images will only usually SELL seasonally too,

santa hats photos are only being downloaded around christmas time

which leads to my next tip...

HOT TIP #3

Keep adding photos!

Keep adding new photos!

Those photos you uploaded will eventually look a bit dated, or may go out of fashion.

The pic of a group of chickens sitting on surgical masks you uploaded a few years ago when the BIRD FLU was going around probably wont be selling as well now that we have SWINE FLU

(though the photos of the surgical masks will be)

So make sure you always add lots of new photos,

of anything and everything!!!

Have fun - good luck!

Cheers, Kristy :)

I've wondered about getting into this and whether it's worth it or not. It would be fun to just take pictures of things people might need rather than trying to be artistic about it. Thanks for the hint on lighting, too. That hangs me up sometimes.

      @anonymous: Hi Cheryl :)

The suggestion to take it on a white background and then remove it and replace it with white does sound funny, but there is a reason for it. :)

The people who buy the photos like to have images they dont have to edit.

Even when an image is taken with a sheet as a plain white background, when the image is seen at 100% you will still be able to see some texture and shadows, etc.

However, it doesnt matter if you dont edit the backgrounds, many photos still sell with unedited backgrounds, different buyers look for different things.

Some buyers have staff who will edit the photos after they are purchased so they can create the exact image they are looking for. For example buying a picture of a smiling family with a plain background, buying a photo of beach and then editing it to seem like the family are on the beach.

Hope that helps - happy clicking!

      Cheers, Kristy

      @anonymous: Hi Cheryl,

You are right - it is a free thing and you dont pay any money ever.

There is absolutely NO fee you have to pay, the fees you see listed are what Dreamstime PAY YOU every time your photo is sold. That is how you make money. :)

The only other thing I can think of is that you may have been looking at the buyers page?

Anyway, let me know if you are still having trouble.

I have been a member with them for years and have never paid anything to them ever, and I have submitted hundreds of photos.

      Cheers, Kristy :)

i was hoping to try this, but after looking into it, it looks as if there is a fee to upload photos and then i have to hope they accept them and then hope they sell. How do you actually make money? i thought it was a free thing, and they just took a portion of the sale.

Good info - and realistic about the potential - "You're not going to get rich - sorry. But it can give you an extra $50, $100, $200 a month - for very little work (which sure would help me out!)" - which is way more than most web pages on this idea!
