Sewing With Window Screen - How To

Updated on February 2, 2017

Tips and Tricks of Sewing With Window Screen

I've recently discovered the fun and diversity of sewing with fiberglass window screen. It's a versatile material and inexpensive enough to use in many craft and sewing projects.

It's easy to work with, though there are a few things you should know when sewing with this non-traditional material. So, why not pick up a roll of screening fabric from the hardware store (or rummage through your tool shed at home) and let's get started!

Cut Window Screen with Craft Scissors and Use a Cardboard Grid

Use craft scissors when cutting mesh window screen. Though the window screen is fine and cuts easily, you always want to save your good sewing scissors for cutting fabric only.

Place the screen on top of a fold out cardboard grid specifically designed for cutting fabric. This makes marking and cutting the screen so much easier and faster.

If you've read any of my sewing articles, you'll see I continue to recommend this cardboard cutting grid. I've been using a grid just like this for years and will never sew without it. Especially when working with this window screen material, the grid makes it super easy to mark and cut.

This grid cutting board is very affordable. Fold it quickly and store neatly out of sight when not in use.

For those of you who don't have huge cutting tables (that would be me), this board works fantastic on the floor or depending on the size of the project, fold it in half and place on a flat sturdy surface to work.

Use straight pins with large heads to pin window screen in place. To do this, I pin directly into my cardboard cutting grid. Or you can also use larger paper binder clips to hold bulkier seams in place temporarily if needed. (Photo credit Pam Irie)

How to Mark Window Screen Material

Marking Seams

I use plain white chalk to mark pleat lines or points when sewing with window screen. It's cheap to use and is only needed for a short time. When finished sewing, you only need to brush any remaining chalk lines away. (Photo credit Pam Irie)

Finishing the Edges

Fiberglass window screen especially is not "poky" like regular aluminum screen, but it's still important to finish the seams. I've found the best way for me to finish the seams is to encase the raw edges into double fold bias tape or something similar. This gives a nice look to the project and you don't have to worry about fraying edges.

Smooth Sewing Tip

Sometimes it may feel like the screen is "dragging" across the base of your sewing machine. If this should happen place something like a piece of paper just under the screen avoiding the area being sewn; this should ensure smooth sewing.

(I used an old pattern envelope in this picture. I've used copy paper and coffee filters too. Use whatever you have on hand if needed.)

I keep my earrings on a large piece of window screen pinned to the bathroom wall with push pins. In our tiny RV, I have a tiny piece of screen for the same purpose.

Have to second your endorsementf cardboard cutting boards! Wouldn't be without one.

I need to feel this material. It must be a lot softer than the old metal type. You've got me intrigued.
