Simple Sewing Projects

Sew a Kitchen Valance with Napkins

Anyone who has sewn for a while knows beginning with simple projects can help a person to quickly grow more confident with their sewing skills. Look over the examples shared on this page to find sewing patterns suitable for beginners as well as for those with more experience.

Make a simple to sew kitchen valance like the one pictured using cloth napkins. For each napkin, simply fold over one corner diagonally and stitch in a 1" seam (as shown), allowing each napkin to hang independently in a triangular shape. That's it!

I haven't actually sewn these potluck bowl covers, but they are on my to-sew list for the near future. Want to make some? Here's the how-to from The Cottage Home.

Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Bias Tape?

(to trim simple sewing projects)

Dana at DanaMadeIt has lots of information on bias tape, including a wonderful tutorial showing how to make custom bias tape in all sorts of fun prints. She has got this down to a real science, believe me. I recently bought a set of these awesome sewing tools and can't wait to try my hand at making bias tape.

My First Try at Making Bias Tape - What do you think? (I can't wait to make more.) YIPPEE!!!

I was able to make 11 1/3 yards of 1/2 inch double fold bias tape with just 1/2 yard of fabric. It was really fun to do. I first read through Dana's method above and then decided to try the technique shown on Prudent Baby. (Find the method that works best for you and get busy.) :)

I used the bias tape making tool in the picture to make my bias tape. It was an easy process.

No collection of simple sewing projects would be considered complete without including a basic pillowcase pattern. Dana from DanaMadeIt blog shows how easy it really is to sew a pillowcase. I love the way she mixes up the fabrics, don't you? Sweet Dreams! :)

Simple Sewing Projects - Cloth Napkins

Linen fabric makes beautiful cloth napkins like those pictured. You can easily change the size of cloth napkins to make as well as the fabrics chosen though the basic steps are always the same. (By the way, if linen isn't your thing, choose a washable durable fabric of your choice. I prefer a darker printed fabric to keep my cloth napkins looking fresher, longer.) Go here for the instructions.

I really don't want to say that I am proud of anything I've made. I think I will always feels like I am just a beginner. I am learning new things all the time.

I like some of these simple craft ideas.

Actually my mom's friend made all the grandkids pillowcases last Christmas and they cherish them, just like they do the quilts that I made for them the Christmas before.

I took Home Ec in high school and made quite a few clothes then. Those are probably my most elaborate sewing projects, but I like sewing more craft things now. Love the hankie valance!!

Curtains for the bathroom. Curtains are the easiest things in the world to make. They are so expensive to buy at the store, but you can save a bundle by making them yourself. It's easier to customize your look too. Great lens. I love the idea for making a valance out of napkins. How fun!

Years ago a friend and I made quilted pillows for gifts. Fourteen total, each with a double fabric ruffle and hand quilted center design. Most proud of completing those, but didn't want to pick up a needle and thread for at least six months after! Lots of fun projects here :)

The wedding quilt I made when my daughter and son-in-law were married 12 years ago. Their first child was 2 before it was done, but it's been on their bed ever since! A hand-quilted double wedding ring. I definitely got hand quilting out of my system with that one! :D

I made a coat out of an old wool blanket. I designed it myself.
