Tripping Down Memory Lane with Woodstock Nation Art

This Sixties Art lens pays homage to graphic and fine artists of the 1960s - their work and their legacy with continuing influence on pop culture. If you experienced music in the rain, bell bottoms jeans, neon colors, dizzying patterns, genuine tie dye and hair, lots of hair - you're probably a member of Woodstock Nation. I survived it all, and still love my patched jean jacket, tall boots and macrame decorations. The 1960s - my teen years - influenced my personal style and I have a closet filled with funky clothes and hats that I wear all the time.

I'm an artist, and I absolutely still love the art and graphics from the Sixties. I confess I'm an unabashed fan of Warhol, Max, and Escher (okay, they're not all sixties artists but they influenced it or were inspired by the artists from that period ) ... and I really like the sixties-influenced work of contemporary artists Shepard Fairey and Banksy, and of course Keith Haring.

Keith Haring Tribute Video - Pennsylvania-born Haring was a New York street artist

Keith Haring, a native of Berks county, Pennsylvania, first took his art to the subways and streets of New York city. He also brought his talent to the children of the world and conducted many free art workshops with inner city kids, children who helped create impressive and colorful murals under Keith's guidance.

One of the late 20th century's most famous graphic artists, known for his faceless and expressive characters drawn in graffiti style, Keith Haring left a huge legacy in both artwork and humanity. Keith died far too early from AIDS-related complications, but his volume of unique pop art lives on.

If you get a chance to see a retrospective of Keith Haring Art Prints - some of which is adult in nature - you'll get the opportunity to experience the broad range of his graphic art talent and his penchant for making cause-related artwork.

Hey, yes, this is an interesing topic that somewhow always stays fresh! Pop culture is a great modern phenomenon that helps us live a fuller life! In my country (Russia) they show a programm on TV that is called "Pop artists". It is a contest of pop artists from New York, and it is very interesing to watch how many artistic people compete and show their talents in so many different ways!

I am class of '66 so I think I was at the optimum time to take all this art in. I loved it. Would spend hours at the high end book stores and the Free Press book store. Looking and looking at all the explosive stuff being printed. It did not matter where we cruised to we always would end up at a book store for a little while. The little mom and pop ones were the best. They would be loaded with posters.

The poster art I remember most were the comic ones. Two gaunt vultures on a dead tree limb "To heck with patience, I want to kill something." A foreign aid package being opened by a supper thin guru type - filled with Baby Ruth bars; and others less family acceptable. A key though, everyone had accessible personal art expression, with just a few inexpensive posters and maybe a black light.

I do remember the 60's, cuz it was full of Beatles! And peace signs. I loved wearing peace sgins and now my daughter has picked it up with the retro 60's styles that have come back. Tie-dye was great. And thanks for visiting my Ex-Hippies lens. This one brought back good memories too! (P.S. Check your link on your Sixties Band Art...it isn't working any more).
