Start An Art Journal

Updated on June 26, 2014

Art JOurnals

Art Journals are becoming a wonderful way to use your creativity every day. With Art Journaling there are no rules and you can do your own thing without fear. Art Journaling is for everyone, no matter if you are a child, an adult or a grandparent. You do not have to know how to draw, you do not need to be a great writer either. You can start off by writing quotes that you like into your art journal, or even start with lists of things. Once you start you will find this addictive. It is a wonderful calming experience that you will want to come back to day after day.

All photos on the page are taken by me and are of my own Art Journals so they are protected under copyright laws.

What do I need to Start Art Journaling?

Alphabet

All you need to start is some paper......................or a journal and something to color a background with, like watercolor crayons and a brush. Then I would suggest that you get a fabulous PITT black pen for your journaling. These pens are what I have recently discovered are the very BEST and write over nearly anything without getting clogged up.

I have been journaling for a while, what supplies would you reccommend to me.??

I would suggest you get some really nice watercolor paper or a watercolor paper journal. If you have not tried them yet for backgrounds I would get a few of the dylusions spray inks and a couple of the crafter workshop stencils. Pan Pastels if you have not tried them, and with them you will need a spray fixitive. That way you can spray over the pan pastels then add another layer and another layer. Oh don't forget to try the sharpie water based paint pens too.:-) Have fun!

Here are some other great Arty Lenses to visit.

SO, what do I do to get started with the Art Journaling?

Create Today
Create Today

To start with you need to color the background...or not! Make the decision anyway. Do you want to color the background or leave it start white? Think about how you could color the background. Do you want to use kids crayons, or do you have some art supplies already that you could use?

How do I do a background in my Art Journal?

Do What You LOve
Do What You LOve

If you want to color the background quickly, just scribble all over it with different colored watercolor crayons. Then spray some water over them and brush all over the page to mix the colors up. If you have a craft heat gun then dry the page, if not just leave it to dry naturally.

What will be the focus of the page?

DReam

Now is where you can really have some fun. You might like to go online and watch videos other people have put up on You Tube of them doing their Art Journaling. This will give you heaps of ideas of what to do next. Or you could cut pictures that you like out of magazines and do a collage, or just glue them in. Look at the Videos that I made for this page and see if anything inspires you there.

What On Earth Will I write about on this Journal page?

Now for the actual journaling. As I said in the intro, just start writing down your shopping list or a list of things that make you feel happy. If you would rather write out your favorite quote then that would work as well. If you want to journal about your day or a tough time you are having fine! Do whatever you feel like doing. It is all Ok.:-)The main thing is to just enjoy yourself.

Sharpie WAter based Poster Paint pens

I have recently add 3 of these to my collection and I ADORE them. I have the pink and yellow fluroescent ones and a red and I LOVE them. I will get the complete collection very very soon as I use them all the time. I bought the medium tip cause I like them but you may like the finer tips better.

OH , I have finished my first Art Journal page, it wasn't so scarey after all.

Create Change
Create Change

After you have finished your first Art Journal page you should feel proud of yourself. Sometimes we have to push yourself to move through the fear to get past it. The most important thing is to PLAY and have fun, try out new products and techniques and have fun.
