Use households staples to make safe clay for kids' crafts

Updated on June 16, 2014

Easy, budget-friendly and non-toxic clay for crafting fun

When my oldest grandchild was about 6 (she's 15 now,) I wrote a little book for her and her twin brothers in which I collected recipes for homemade clay, paint, and other craft supplies. Then I thought it might be useful for other parents and caregivers so I published it. It's still available at Amazon.

One of the sections was on homemade clay, a substitute for Playdough. There are many recipes and they are all easy, useful and fun. I'm sharing two recipes here today that may or not be in the book, but they are similar. You will feel secure that your product is completely safe and you will spend very little money, plus it's fun to make the clay!

Flour and Water Clay

This is the simplest recipe and is great for making Christmas ornaments or handprint plaques. The salt makes it sparkle like glitter.

4 cups flour

1 cup salt

1/1/2 cups water

Simply mix the ingredients together and knead like bread dough. Kids will love helping with that part. You can add food color if you like. Air dry your craft masterpieces overnight or bake it on low until it is dry.

Easy oatmeal clay

This clay looks like stone and is great for making castles, etc.

2/3 clups rolled oats

1 cup flour

1/2 cup water.

Mix it all together in a bowl. Turn it out on a floured board and roll it until it is smooth.

Great idea to make your own clay! I'm going to try this out with my grandson who is 3 now. I'm sure he'll enjoy it.
