Vintage Trim

Updated on September 22, 2014

Vintage Notions -- Rick Rack, Bias Tape, Embroidered Ribbon, Woven Trim

I love vintage trim. By vintage trim, I'm referring to rick rack, bias tape, old lace, and embroidered and woven ribbon among other embellishments and doo dads!

The vintage trim shown here is jacquard ribbon. The green side with pink diamond shapes is the top or right side. The predominately pink side is the back or wrong side. I think both sides are beautiful! This ribbon is nothing less than a work of art.

Jacquard Ribbon

Vintage Trim

According to Merriam-Webster, jacquard is defined as "a fabric of intricate variegated weave or pattern." In addition to this being a precise technique, I believe this means that different colored threads are used to make the entire fabric or ribbon in Jacquard ribbons.

It differs from embroidered or woven ribbon. In these types of ribbons, a base ribbon is used then embellishments are stitched on top.

Vintage Trim

Embroidered ribbon is a sewing trim that usually has a solid background and different colored thread embroidered on top to make designs.

This vintage embroidered ribbon has a cherry motif. I think it's so cute and would look great on curtains or pillows or other accessories in a baby's or little girl's bedroom.

Adding a border of pretty ribbon or trim to kitchen towels that don't get used often is a great way to show off your collection of vintage trim.

Rick Rack

Vintage Trim

Some of the coolest vintage trim in my book is rick rack. It's also spelled ric rac somtimes.

Rick rack has a distinct style and goes great on patterned cloth to highlight the edges.

Rick rack comes in all sizes. Some is tiny, like the blue package shown here on the left side. Larger rick rack is more standard, like the two other packages shown. I've also seen some whopper rick rack that was about 2 inches wide!

Rick Rack is Featured in Big Business - Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler star

In the movie Big Business, Bette Midler's character, well, one of her characters (she and Lily Tomlin each play twins), sews a new outfit and trims it in rick rack! It's a hoot!

I own this book and it's full of eye candy for vintage trim lovers. Some of the inspiration boards for projects are so pretty, I'd hang them on my wall!

Uses for Vintage Trim

I've seen some of the funkier trims from the 1970s,

for instance, used for guitar straps and

sewn on clothes to trim the bottom of jeans.

Other more delicate trims are sewn

to the edges of pillowcases, towels, and

dresser scarves to give a finishing touch.

Woven Trim

The vintage trim shown here is heavy and woven from all of the colors shown.

This trim is sturdy and substantial. I can just imagine it sewn to the hem of bell bottom blue jeans in the 1970s. Ah yes. I lived it. I saw it.

I love vintage trim, especially ric rac and pompoms. It really does make linen more charming in my opinion.

@Virginia Allain: What great uses for vintage trim. I like to use it for items that won't be washed very often.

I grab it whenever I spot some at a yard sale or estate sale. Some of it I've used on my doll clothes that I make and some has gone into scrapbooking projects.

I covered some boxes in fabric and decorated them with trim too.
