Happy Kindergartener | "Learn to Watercolor" Lesson

This first lesson is the easiest lesson in the series. It focuses on encouraging the beginning watercolor student to use spontaneous brush strokes, avoiding the muddy look of an overworked watercolor painting. You don't need anything more than a basic set of art suppiles to recreate this adorable kindergarten student.

While continuing to focus on very basic watercolor painting skills, this lesson offers a new challenge - painting a large area before the paint dries. This monkey's arms, body, legs and tail are all one big brown area. Students will want to begin on the left and work to the right, and paint with a relatively wet brush to avoid the dreaded streak. Here's a chance to paint a lively illustration for a story that they may have enjoyed as a toddler - The Little Engine That Could.

This watercolor lesson provides students with their first opportunity to create a simple wash for the grass covered hilltop. Whimsical Flight is last watercolor lesson plan featured in our guide. The pink big balloon offers one more opportunity to try your hand at creating the perfect wash. The cloud will test the beginning artist's sensitivity to color, as it isn't a right out of the pan color. Instead it is a very watered down blue which allows the girl and her balloon to be the focus of this painting.

The printable illustration for this lesson will definitely require a small brush to paint the details.
