10 Things I Hate That Driver's Do

Updated on July 27, 2010

I understand that I am not the greatest driver and sometimes I make mistakes when I am driving as well, however there are some drivers that drive me completely nuts.

  1. NO TURN SIGNAL – It drives me totally bonkers when a person turns or moves over to another lane without turning on their turn signal.  I mean really people how am I supposed to guess where you are going?  Turn signals are meant to help other drivers understand what you are going to do next.  Help us all out by using your turn signal each and every time you are going to turn or switch lanes.  Come on people use your turn signal!
  2. WRONG TURN SIGNAL – Ok so this one I could never understand. I mean I have difficulty remembering my left from my right and I am horrible about directions however the turn signal is really simple and easy to use.  If you are changing lanes understand which lane you are going to go to and then use your turn signal accordingly.  If your left turn signal is on most drivers are going to assume that you are either going to turn or move to the left not to the right.  Help us out people use the right turn signal!
  3. NOT TURNING TURN SIGNAL OFF -The other day I was driving in the left hand lane next to a person who was in the right hand lane with their turn signal on.  I stayed back a bit thinking that they wanted to move over.  After about 5 minutes of this. I figured out that they were not moving over so I sped up to get away from them.  In my rear view mirror I could see that others were doing and thinking the same thing as me.  It wasn’t until I pulled off of the exit that this person finally figured out that their left hand turn signal had been on the whole time and they shut it off.  This was only slightly frustrating to me because I have done this myself a time or two. Come on people turn off your turn signal when you aren’t using it!
  4. CUTTING ME OFF WHEN NO ONE IS BEHIND ME – This just pisses me off. People you are so eager to cut me off putting us both in danger when you could have waited 20 seconds for me to pass.  Not only is cutting someone off dangerous but its also totally stupid and annoying.  I mean realistically all you have to do is wait a few seconds more and then there is tons of space to maneuver since no one is behind me. Come on people there really is no need to cut someone off!
  5. GOING ONE AT A TIME AT A FOUR WAY STOP – Here is the thing about a four way stop.  When the car across from you goes you can go too. I understand that this is a strange concept for some but really if you think about it hard enough it makes perfect sense.  Somehow this seems to be the most difficult concept for most.  So we sit for ever at a four way stop waiting for cars to go one at a time for absolutely no reason at all other than the fact that no one knows what to do at a four way stop.  Come on people it’s a four way stop; not that hard to figure out!
  6. COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP TO TURN – Now I understand that to turn, slowing down is necessary. I mean it can be hard to maneuver corners, especially when they are tight corners.  However coming to a complete stop when there is no traffic coming in the opposite direction is just ridiculous and totally unexpected for the driver behind you. This also goes for those of you who have to come to a complete stop to move over a lane; completely annoying and unnecessary.  Really people slow down but don’t come to a complete stop!
  7. DRIVING WHILE DOING OTHER THINGS - Now this is one of my pet peeves. I mean I understand that we all do this to some extent.  Just understand that there is a time and place for everything.  Putting on makeup, combing your hair, shaving, brushing teeth those are all things you should do in the bathroom. If you have to do them in your car I suggest pulling over and parking to do them.  No matter how talented you think you are at multitasking while driving you are not that skilled.  Hands on the steering wheel people!
  8. SITTING AT GREEN LIGHTS, RUNNING RED LIGHTS – Sometimes I think that some drivers are totally color blind.  I have seen so many people who sit and sit at green lights.  These people have obviously never driven in New York City.  That is definitely grounds for getting the horn.  In the same vein running red lights is simply crazy and dangerous and even with the red light cameras that are out and about I still see so many drivers doing this.  Ok people green means go and red means stop!
  9. DRIVING BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT – Speed limits are posted for a reason.  Going above the speed limit is not a good thing and the same goes for going below the speed limit.  Do not drive 10mph in a 30mph zone, I have places to go and people to see I really don’t want to sit there and stare at your bumper as you putter down the street.  So try and speed up a little, I understand if you are lost and trying to find your street otherwise just driving slow to drive slow is not working for me.   Come on people drive the speed limit!
  10. SPEEDING AROUND ME WHEN I AM STOPPED AT A CROSSWALK – So there is a reason why I am stopped at the crosswalk.  People are crossing.  This happens all the time, so much so that I have come to expect this every time I stop at a crosswalk.  I even go so far as to block both lanes if there are two lanes because I know someone will try and pass me while I am stopped at a crosswalk.  Crosswalks were made for people to walk across the street watch out for the pedestrians’ people!

I hope that this helps us all to drive a little better.   Really it’s just 10 simple rules of the road.  Can’t we all just drive together?

@ Goji, Yopu stated I-81 was the most dangerous highway in Va due to the mountains and Truckers...As a trucker who travels I-81 from Tn to upper Pa I know it is a Dangeruos Hwy but try I-95 from Jersey to Richmond. One of the things that makes it so dangerous is the belief that trucks should not be allowed in the extreme left lanes.(as proven by all of the lane restrictions placed on trucks)Most Trucks are just passing through on a schedule. When we have to cope with 4 wheelers that drive slower than the speed limit in the only lanes we are allowed in and the left lanes are empty it makes us irritable too. Think about it We are sitting out here experiencing the same things you are and only have two lanes to drive in while you have 3 or more. And Heaven forbid that we are traveling the speed limit when you come from the extreme left lane at 20 mph over to make your exit 500 feet in front of us..

Yes we have more wheels thus more brakes but just one of our brakes stops more than all four of yours put together. I'm an old school driver and try to be as courteous as possible to both 4 wheelers and semis but todays cdl schools are license mills and don't teach how to drive in the real world.. Before you fuss at a trucker Think about everything in your house including the materials it's built out of... Some along the way A trucker carried that product to your location...

      Without Trucks America Stops...

Haha, just stumbled across this hub and I LOVE it!! Totally totally agree with you. Also, about people stopping at green and going on red, my great grandfather actually WAS color blind, and when he got older, he began to forget if the light "on top" meant go or stop, so he would actually go on red and stop on green just like you said! Scary stuff.

Expanding on # 9: Why can't they just pull over and let the 10 cars behind them pass by? And then they can pitter putter along at their own parking lot pace. And if they're lost, why don't they pull over and check a map, GPS, or stop and ask for directions? Happens to me all the time on the way to/from work. I work in an industrial area so there's trucks (semis, dump trucks, etc.) all over the place on a regular basis and they all like to drive 10-under it seems. I wish the government here would widen the road already, only been discussing it for 40 years...

LOL ... LOL # 4 & 7 are definitely pet peeves of mine. What about cutting a party off just to turn off at the next exit or corner!!!

The inattentive driver that reads or texts while driving!!! As much as we all would like to think we are multi-taskers we are not!!! Excellent and humorous hub. Voted up, rated useful, funny and shared!!!

Bk - You make some great points!! I just recently saw a car in front of me weaving a bit and when I went to pass noticed it was a couple having a crazy argument. I was so scared that I drove away quickly. I also cannot stand drivers that are not handicapped and park in handicapped spaces but that is a whole other hub!

Ah, yes, the folks who don't turn off their turning signal - and there you are not knowing if you can pass - because then of course they will quickly move into that lane when you do.

How about those folks putting on makeup, drinking coffee, having wild arguments with whoever else is in the car.

Here in NYC we have two more problems - folks that drive in the bicycle lane, and the slobs that pull into a bus stop (always illegal) while they run into the store for a moment - of course the bus comes. I often feel one way to get tons of money here in the City and probably elsewhere - give out as many tickets as possible. Of course the culprits are always screaming about 'go fight REAL crime!' Ah destroying quality of life and endangering people is a Real crime.

And I wish drunk drivers were instantly jailed.

      Enjoyed your hub! Yay!

      Hello Hello - Thank you!

Goji - That might not be a bad idea. The more I hear the more I want to add. I bet we could reach 100 quickly!

Coolmon - It is really annoying when someone cuts you off just to get to a store. Or cuts you off and then slows down or comes to a complete stop! Dangerous too!

ocbill - We passed the cell phone law here in WA State and still I see people with cell phones to their ears causing major strife on the highway. I just don't get it!! And actually it is legal in #5 for two cars across from each other to go at the same time. That is actually what you are supposed to do but people don't understand that concept and get really confused.

Numbers 7 thru 10 get to me also. I agree.

Especially those overly cautious cell phone in hand speaker phones c'mon.?

#5 &#6 - Unfortunately, you gotta do it & respect the law. After all cops are good at hiding in spots to give out tickets just for this reason.

Number four is the frequent occurrence in my area. Usually the person in question will cut me off then stop quickly to get into a Walmart or shopping center parking lot when there is no one behind me. No wonder insurance is so high for some drivers. Good article

Mike - You brought up some great ones that I had not even thought of. There are definetly some morons behind the wheels out there!! All I can say is take a deep breath and drive safely! :)

Cutting me off when no one is behind me in order to slam on the brakes to make a turn is about as bad as it gets for me. I have no patience for that.

Driving with the bright lights shining in my face doesn't make me happy, either. Usually someone is simply driving with the brights on because they have a headlight out, but sometimes it just seems to be for its own sake. If I can see with the low beams on, so can the person coming at me.

Idiots that honk their horns a split-second after the light turns green makes me want to get out and kick somebody in the--well, you know. I'm no slower than anyone else when a light turns green.

Cars blocking both lanes while chatting away, intentionally oblivious to the cars waiting behind them both for their conversation to end. Or, even worse, folks chatting who become angry because you have the nerve to interrupt their conversation by wanting to drive down the street.

This has nothing to do with the way people drive, but morons that have the bass on their radio cranked up to the extent that it rattles my car aggravate me. It's one thing to play music loud--I still do it myself on occasion--but when the bass is cranked and all you hear are pulsating vibrations--what does anyone get out of that (besides going deaf)?

Good article that obviously strikes a resonant chord with everyone! Thanks.

The Pink Umbrella - Thats what that women gets. Everyone is in such a hurry that they don't ever see the whole picture. Too bad for her.

Richard Stephen - I am glad that you were able to vent :) I just hate when that happens to no end.

Number 4 is my pet peeve as well. I can't count how many times cross traffic has darted out in front of me when there wasn't anyone behind at all! What"s the hurry? I'd be past you in 10 seconds. Jeesh! OK, I feel better now.

    • the pink umbrella profile image

the pink umbrella 7 years ago from the darkened forest deep within me.

I was slammed from behind once because these people who were test driving a car, stopped at a green light. I had no choice but to stop, and 3 seconds later, a woman hit me from behind...and you know what? I dont blame her at all. She hit me doing 55, but the light was green, the people in front of me shouldnt have stopped.

And the other day, I got cut off. What this other person didnt know as they were so eager to get in front of me, was that there was road work up ahead, and the lane they had just come from was the only one open. So i made the lane change with no cars in front of me, but 2 seconds later, a whole line of cars followed, and i smiled to myself looking in the rearview mirror, because the impatient woman was stuck with her right turn signal and no one would let her in!

GojiJuiceGoodness - Yeah truckers can be very scary drivers. It also annoys me when cars cut off truckers. I can feel my list getting longer already lol! Thanks for your comments.

      Things that annoy me--

      1. Other drivers getting mad when I come to a complete stop at a stop sign or red light(it's the law, guys!).

      2. Tailgating when I'm passing on the interstate, even if I'm going the speed limit.

I live 10 minutes from the most dangerous interstate in Virginia (I81) and see a lot of crazy driving, especially from the truckers. Btw, I81 is more dangerous than the interstates around DC because: the mountains + truckers = something REALLY dangerous!

Good hub. I think nearly everyone in the US could make major improvements in their driving, as I am witness to every time I drive into town.
