2011 BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS

Updated on March 20, 2011

When nobody was looking the otherwise sober and subdued engineers in the Black Forest decided that they were gonna go racing and didn't care what the rest of the world thought. This completely new, and surprisingly impulsive attitude in Bavaria is what has led to a truly compelling enduro racer in the GS450X, and in what is a good ol' fashioned rip up the track superbike in the 2011 BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS

The HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS is exactly what you'd expect from a BMW racing machine taken to the ultimate expression of the superbike form. With all of the different engine configurations that BMW has been working with as of late, you wouldn't expect the boxer to rear it's head(s) again, but there it is, sticking right out of the side of the racing fairing like it was still 1974.

What does the 2011 BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS give you for your nearly (gulp) $28,000? You get a 1,170 cc Bavarian pushed to the max air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder boxer, two camshafts, four valves per cylinder in radial arrangement, a central balancer shaft that cranks out an extremely conservatively estimated 85 foot pounds of torque at 6,000 rpm and 133 hp at 8,750 rpm which come with a wink wink from the Munchen engineers as this engine will likely show at least 160 horses on any dyno that's been calibrated with anything but a Fisher Price Stride-to-Ride Learning Car.

When it's time to hit the track you'll know that you've got Bavaria's finest setup under you thanks to the tubular steel space frame manufactured from self-supporting carbon; a front Telelever with a spring pre-load that's continuously variable, and features adjustable compression damping, rebound damping and vehicle height; and an EVO Paralever, Öhlins central spring strut, with continuously adjustable spring pre-load, vehicle height, rebound and compression damping in the rear. The braking is taken care of by Brembo monobloc 320mm dual floating brake discs, with four piston calipers in the front and matched in the rear by a single 265 mm disc brake with a double-piston floating caliper All of this amazing technology is packed into a remarkably light package which tips the scales at only 374 pounds.

So is the HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS competitive? Just take it out on the track to find out how it spanks even the four cylinder competition. The HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition ABS is a winning racer that can win any MotoGP right out of the crate. Why this bike has a license plate bracket is a complete mystery. It is a pure track racer, and should never see a public road!
