Auto Startups- the world of innovation

Updated on July 17, 2016

The Auto Show

Here is the story of Los Angeles auto show which happened in November 2015 at LA Convention Center, Los Angeles, CA that was full of journalists, designers and industrial maniacs, but what inspired the most are the hottest startups that impressed with their unique vision.

This is the safety maniac that uses the cell phone embedded with multiple sensors and mobile computing devices, namely, software for identifying surrounding conditions and hazards in order to improve or be applied to driving to replace the car’s active safety systems. The system is designed to read your driving habits and alert the driver during a change in the driving style such as lazy steering. This system also features downloadable mobile applications that can identify surrounding conditions and hazards in order to improve driving.

Elio Motors

Founder Paul Elio had come up with a low cost three wheeled vehicle but legally classified as a motorcycle with a seating capacity of two people front to back which makes it half as wide with respect to a typical car therefore twice the aerodynamic capacity.

A Sneak Peek Inside the Elio:

  • Surprising MPG

The company claimed that the intensely engineered Elio boost up to 84 mpg. This puts it way ahead in the competition.

  • Promising Safety

The vehicle has successfully undergone through National highway traffic safety administration crash testing. Each Elio comes equipped with a Safety Management System that includes three airbags – a reinforced roll-cage frame, Anti-Lock Braking System, and 50% larger crush zones than similar vehicles.

  • All Americans Style

Elio is American-made targeting utilization of 90% North American content, and re-engineered existing technology throughout. That means no trial and error anywhere. Just tried and true everywhere.

  • Low Cost

It seems like everything just costs more today. At Elio Motors, we believe wallets need a break. A new vehicle targeted $6,800 base price is not just what people need

The company manufactures powerful semi conductor laser systems that enabled the vision of self driving cars from an area the size of your thumbnail. Its sensors are able to deliver 5 KWs of optical power which is equivalent of 80 high beam headlights.

  • Driver Monitoring System Illumination (DMS)

TriLumina's compact, high-power illumination technology dramatically improves the illumination options for vehicle driver monitoring systems.

TriLumina semiconductor lasers address problems associated with conventional LEDs such as heat generation, power use, noise, packaging expense, external optics requirements and the annoying red glow. In addition, TriLumina's DMS lasers provide dynamic and real-time illumination control that allows solid-state scanning and tracking. Noise, heat and power consumption are all reduced dramatically by illuminating only what's important.

Once the head tracking software identifies the location of the head, the software instructs the laser where to send the light to ensure constant illumination and consistent tracking without illuminating the entire interior of the car.

  • LiDAR

TriLumina's semiconductor laser solutions enable low cost LiDAR (Light Distance And Ranging) for consumer applications.

TriLumina is developing new chips to advance time of flight capabilities while reducing power requirements and size. TriLumina's fast pulse technology provides dramatic improvement in illumination cost, form factor for LIDAR.

Nebula Systems

Nebula Systems has developed a secure, cloud-based, vehicle data Analytics Platform that accesses the vast and unexploited data generated by modern vehicles.

This platform, called MECH5®, addresses the main problem in the Connected Car World: limitation in obtaining key data from virtually any car. By using manufacturer specific protocols, we can provide over 100 times more vehicle data than most current competitive offerings. It can also remotely diagnose and fix faults in any vehicle ECU.

  • Breakdown Assistance

In a breakdown or non-start situation, MECH5 saves you time, worry and money by enabling remote assistance to family or friends. This allows you to assess the problem and possibly advise the next best steps to get them moving again.

  • Prevent Problems

Using more than 20 years of diagnostics experience, MECH5 is able to access all the electronics in your car to easily create complete vehicle health reports.

Your car is equipped with a large number of computers and sensors. Using MECH5 you are able to read faults and also check key values before they turn into problems.

  • Your Personal Car Logbook

Using MECH5, everything done to your car is historically kept: Health reports, Service Procedures, Maintenance, Configuration Changes, Fault Codes...

You or whom you choose (such as your Mechanic) can access this information for future reference, audit presentations or even understanding current problems.

Voice recognition technology is the upcoming advancement and this Silicon Valley based start up used the potential of this technology by containing it on a chip named Smart Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) solution is built to transform human-to-machine communication into intelligent, intuitive experience – with or without an internet connection, so it provides high quality results. Capio’s Algorithm uses pattern recognition that can also identify unwanted background noises and learn to ignore them.

Capio's Claims

  • Clearly Accurate

Capio recognizes speech in noisy environments, and learns individual accents and behavior patterns in just a few interactions.

  • Clearly Reliable

Our patented Embedded Cloud provides cloud-quality speech recognition anywhere you go – with or without an Internet connection.

  • Clearly Insightful

Our contextually-aware ASR engine is powered by years of research from Carnegie Mellon University and the latest advancements in Deep Learning.

  • Clearly Efficient

Capio leverages the power of thousands of parallel cores on a single GPU to transcribe audio and process information faster than anything else on the market – freeing up computational resources for other uses.

  • Clearly Customizable

Capio offers the services of an entire speech development team in a single platform. With just a few clicks, we deliver customizable models that outperform off-the-shelf, best-of-breed speech solutions.

High Mobility

This can be said as owner recognition system; this German firm has developed software that enables user to make themselves visible to their vehicles with the help of a smart device. The software reads real time information so that any vehicle you enter knows who you are and how you like to drive. It can also read your heart rate and other from a wearable device.

This software platform also allows cars to connect with their surroundings in a simple, secure and direct way. This enables a multitude of application scenarios to be realized such as key-less access control, personalization settings and Communicating with infrastructure, e.g. charging poles (electric cars) or car parks (payment machines). The integration of Smart phones or other mobile device is also simple and secure. High Mobility’s technology distinguishes itself from existing solutions by not requiring an internet connection. Services can therefore be offered where mobile networks are restricted such as in underground garages and car parks.

Getaround has a car for every occasion, from the everyday commuter, to a luxurious convertible or family-friendly SUV. This San Francisco based start up created an app to rent the vehicle when not in use that enables car owners to earn some extra money.

How it works:

  • Renters enter their driver license and credit card information
  • Then search for the type of car they want
  • The app unlocks it for them
  • Insurance, roadside assistance and screening are included

Sober Steering

This start up is focused in the power to stop drunk driving. Sober steering has invented a touch based bio sensor technology that can be installed in the steering wheel to read the drivers blood alcohol level.

How it works:

  • Biosensors: The future of alcohol detection is NOW.

Biosensors, installed in the steering wheel, can detect if a driver has been drinking simply through touch.

  • Interlock: A simple, effective solution to prevent drunk driving.

If alcohol is detected above a preset limit, the vehicle is immobilized. The system resets itself within one minute so that a sober driver can take control.

  • Alerts: Instantly notify dispatch when alcohol is detected.

Provide instant alerts to your dispatch when alcohol is detected by integrating Sober Steering with a GPS/fleet management system. Either use TDM Fleet Management, our simple, affordable system, or integrate with your existing fleet management system.
