Storage for Your Pickup Truck: Northern Tool and Equipment Aluminum Boxes

Updated on February 20, 2014

Storage for Your Pickup

Owning a pickup comes with several benefits, but secure storage room isn't one of them. A truck is useful for dump runs, debris removal, moving furniture, and fishing trips in remote areas; try to go grocery shopping, however, and you'll find that you can't make a single stop on the way home. Without secure storage in the back of the pickup, most trucks run out of space fast. Tools and other important items must either be jammed into the back of the cab or they risk being stolen from the open bed. Luckily, Northern has a line of equipment and tool storage truck boxes for this very reason.

Before any purchase, double-check the size of your truck and make sure that the box you buy fits properly.

Crossbed Truck Storage

Since you bought a truck, it makes sense that you want to reserve as much room in the back as possible. A crossbed storage and toolbox is a good solution for you. Crossbed boxes lay across the back of the truck, just behind the cab, but generally leave some floor space. If you're picking up a load of 2X4s or plywood, you'll still be able to slide your cargo beneath the crossbed storage box. This is the best of both worlds, really.

Crossbed storage is available in single and double-lid models, so you can figure out what you'd need for your typical jobs.  Like all boxes, these are lockable, so you can make as many stops on your trip as you like.  Getting an aluminum truck storage box is your best bet. Black molded plastic boxes tend to get really hot out in the sun all day, to the point where the interior of the box is like an oven. The Northern Tool aluminum crossbed truck storage box reflects a majority of the sunlight, keeping its contents relatively cool.

Storage Chest Truck Box

If you need more secure room for tools and equipment, and you're less concerned with maximizing the floor space of your truckbed, consider buying a Northern Tool and Equipment storage chest truck box. Like a crossbed container, these boxes are made to sit behind the cab across the width of the truck, but unlike the crossbed models, they go right down to the bed itself. As a result, you have a depth to this type of storage box unlike any other. If you're generally working with large tools and you need the extra room, the storage chest style may be for you.

Top Mount Truck Storage

Top Mount Truck Storage boxes actually mount up on top of the sides of the bed, facing out. This type of box is perfect for those who work in trades, or anyone who needs their tools immediately accessible to them. If you plan to park your truck next to a work site, you'll most likely be going back and forth all day long. The Northern Tool and Equipment Top Mount Box is a good choice for you. Like all the other styles, these boxes primarily come in aluminum, and are lockable, to keep your various smaller tools safe when you step away.

Side Mount Truck Storage

Northern Tool and Equipment carries a full line of side mount boxes. Some fit over the wheel well, and some have sliding drawers. All of these models are intended to maximize your possible storage space, by using whatever empty spaces remain in the bed of the truck. While this may not be the first storage box you purchase, if you only need a small amount of secure storage in the back of your truck, consider a side mount box. If you've already bought a chest storage box or a crossbed box, this type may be next on your list.

Make sure to maximize the benefits of owning a pickup.  Buy a Northern Tool and Equipment Storage box, and stop worrying about what to do with all your important items.

Very nice addition, DIFH. I'm guessing that's where your dog can be found, eh?

      Thanks for the input!

Fuel storage is another type storage; these are often used for filling off road equipment. The fuel storage boxes sometimes have a narrow, shallow tool storage box that mounts on the tank. These narrow, shallow additions to the tanks can be purchased separately. These fit well in the backs of extended cab pickups. Take out the jump seats/bench seat and mount it right behind the front seat and you can still use the entire bed of the truck.

If you put padding on the lid of the tool box, your dog can ride in comfort and can more easily look out the windows, making the ride more enjoyable for your four-legged buddy.
