Ford F-250 Super Duty Lariat has no power

An Ford F-250 Super came limping in this morning with a very peculiar problem. This F-250 has a check engine light, no power and extreme difficulty shifting into over drive. Although we are an import service center, we do service a lot of domestics and we have some great techs that love a challenge no matter what the vehicle is. The first thing we want to do is find out if we have a check engine light on our F-250.

Fuel pump pressure test

Ford F-250 Super Duty has no power

We need to get as much information on the vehicle and from the customer as possible. This is what we know before start diagnostic procedures:

VEHICLE: 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty Lariat 7.3L, V8, MFI, OHV, VIN F, Eng Desg -

MILEAGE: 164000

Customer Concern: The Ford F-250 engine has no power after it is driven for about 10 minutes. It will not shift into overdrive and will not go over 60 MPH. The Check Engine Light (CEL) is on and it set a code P1211.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Lariat has no power: Tests and diagnostics

1. Check the fuel pressure when the Ford F-250 loses power and stalls. It should maintain 50-60 PSI under all driving conditions.

2. If the fuel pressure Is dropping, tee a vacuum gauge in on the inlet to the fuel pump. Monitor the vacuum when the fuel pressure drops. If the vacuum is increasing to more than about 6" vacuum, suspect a restriction in the filter screens in the sending unit. To service, remove the sender and disassemble it. Inside the sender are 2 filter screens. Clean the screens if they are dirty, clean any debris from the fuel tank, and recheck operation.

3. If the vacuum reading stays below 6", check the power to the fuel pump on the Pink/Black (PK/BK) wire and the ground on the Black (BK) wire. Verify full battery voltage is present across the wires when the fuel pressure is low. If so and there is no restriction before the fuel pump, suspect a weak fuel pump.

Potential Causes:

Restricted Filter Screens

Fuel Pump
