How to Ensure Child Safety in Cars - Essential Auto Features for Child Safety

Updated on November 1, 2012

Ensure Essential Auto Features for Child Safety

Accidents are the most frequent cause of death among children and it is of utmost importance to keep a child safe in the car. There are a number of systems such as LATCH and ISOFIX that provide a child’s seat to be firmly fixed in a car. These offer much more protection to a child than simply using a seat belt. There are chances for children to be seriously injured or even die in a car accident if they are not fastened with seat belt or not placed in an appropriate sized and correctly fitted child seat.

So necessary safety precautions must be followed when driving with children. While making decisions to buy a car, safety features are to be given great importance. The essential auto features for safety are available even in a used car.

Please go through below given essential features for child safety in Car

Automatic Power Window Reversal

One of the most essentials of auto features is an automatic power window reversal. It is very useful in protecting the children from the risk of opening the windows, letting arms hang out or getting fingers pinched when closing the power windows. This feature has been widely included in cars made only after 2010 in which a closing window will automatically go into reverse if it meets any resistance.

Child Restraint

Improved designs of child restraints have come with an aim of preventing its rotation during an accident. As the restraint system responds to sudden braking or a crash, children are less likely to hit part of the car’s interior and will also be subjected to reduced forces. If your car has a passenger-side airbag that can't be switched off, it is better to place the restraint in the back seat for maximum protection. Be careful not to make your baby sit on it for more than 20 to 30 minutes a day.

Child Safety Lock

It is a very simple but very essential device for the child’s safety in a car. It should be deployed as a child cannot suddenly decide to open a door as you are traveling along. Put the child safety lock on so that you can stop the potentially dangerous situation of your child opening the door while the car is moving.

Shift Interlock

Shift interlock is the most essential as well as taken for granted auto features. Even though it had been made in use for a good long time it was considered as a voluntary feature by manufacturers. Even now there are some cars that lack this function. It is used to prevent a car from being put in gear without the brake pedal simultaneously being pressed

I like you hub but I have to say it is the image you used, not the article itself that got me into read it. I thought “finally – someone is going to tell these parents how to buckle their kids properly by showing pictures of poorly buckled kids!” But your article didn’t talk about that at all. Infants of the age in that picture should be rear-facing, that one is forward facing and that is very dangerous. Also, there is either no chest clip, or if there is one, the parent has it so loose it is down by belly button. In an impact the baby can “telescope” and completely or partially come through the safety harnesses of the child seat when buckled in this fashion. Is it possible to either make edits to hub to note these dangers or find a better car seat image? Overall, great hub though!
