Mitsubishi Montero will not start

Mitsubishi Montero will not start

A Mitsubishi Montero was towed in today. Now, I am not a big fan of Mitsubishi, but our customers that own them swear by them. And to be honest, other than regular maintenance, we really don't see a-lot of Mitsubishi's in our shop for mechanical problems. But when we do, it is usually something major.

Back to the no-start. Here is the vehicle information, and original complaint when the Montero was brought in:

Mitsubishi Montero Motor

Mitsubishi Montero original complaint

VEHICLE:  2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited 3.5L, V6, MFI, SOHC, VIN R, Eng Desg 6G74

MILEAGE:  47250

Vehicle was towed in for a no start overnight. The vehicle started right up in the morning on the first attempt. The engine will ping real bad and stall out when it is hot, then it barely wants to crank over. Starter draw is over 500 amps. If you disconnect the coil it still cranks over real hard.

Mitsubishi Montero will not start: Diagnostics

1. Since the vehicle started fine after sitting over night, and started acting up after it warmed up, we knew immediately that there had to be some kind of mechanical problem with the engine. So our first step is to check all the fluids; coolant, oil

2. Next see if the engine can be turned over by hand. If not remove any drive belts and try again

Mitsubishi Montero wont start: confirmed fix

Potential Causes:

Oil Level

Engine Coolant Level

Confirmed Fix:

Filled Coolant: The engine was totally out of coolant! When the technician was filling up the system, the coolant was running out of the rear heater core lines as fast as it was being poured in. Also needed to replace heater core. Replacing the Heater core on a Mitsubishi Montero can be a very time consuming, expensive job.

My Mitsubishi Montero 1996 use stall terribly when I step on the accelerator. Again I noticed that the gear delays in changing while the engine gets hard to start when hot. I changed the fuel filter and the stalling has reduced. However it is still hard to start when the engine gets hot, maybe after a brief stop. The gear also delays. i have to step hard and long on the accelerator before the automatic gear changes.

Kindly advise me on the cause and solution. Please do copy your responses to

Hi Gefforyt. I had a giggle when you mentioned you were not a big fan of what we affectionately know as the "Bitsarmissin"

I did not envy you the heater core replacement job. Downright tedious!

I agree, a blown head gasket can be a real pain, and since we have no reputable machine shop close by it will take us up to 3 days to get our heads back after having them examined or resurfaced. In this instance the customer was extremely lucky.

If Mitsubishi's stall out instead of overheating and blowing out the head gasket, that's a good quality IMO. Replacing a blown head gaskets is not a lot of fun.
