Nanodiamonds are small, very small. They exhibit all of the impressive properties of their larger diamond counterparts, but nano-diamonds can average about 4-6 nanometers in length depending on the supplier and grade of solution that is ordered, and at that size it would be theoretically possible to place about 200,000 of these tiny nanoparticles on the head of a pin. Controlled explosions of high-grade TNT or RDX in water-filled containment chambers (one of which the US and IAEA is using to make a case for war against Iran) create these small marvels and it is for such creation process that they are sometimes known as detonation nano-diamonds as opposed to a counterpart non-detonation variety. Current yields have found useful applications as nano diamond lubricants in engines and machinery of all sorts up to and including use in aircraft and space travel designs. Many mechanics and consumers are beginning to realize the powerful potential in nanodiamond lubricants.

Industrial applications of cut diamonds have evolved due to the hardness and thermal conductivity of this allotrope of carbon which are both the highest of any bulk material. This heat resistance is also present on the nano-scale and makes for a suitable additive into auto and truck engine oil. Able to endure long heat cycles on the inside of internal combustion engines nano diamonds act like minuscule ball bearings in order to dissipate the friction between the pistons and engine block walls. The end result of using such an additive is that the oil lifetime is expanded as well as less wear on the automobile motor, all while obtaining a greater gas mileage due to the way the mobility increase works to lower overall fuel consumption. Horsepower gains can also be realized if a consumer drops a bottle of nanodiamond lubricant in with the next scheduled oil change.

This is really a remarkable type of product with nanodiamond engine oil additives and other nanodiamond lubricants performing great things under hoods around the world. Everyone from cross-country truckers to Nascar and other race car drivers and specialists are implementing this breakthrough material in order to reduce miles per gallon (MPG) and reduce operating temperatures. Other possible points of application are differentials, transmissions, power steering systems, fuel injection and delivery systems, wheel bearings and even AC & coolant systems in both commercial and consumer vehicles. On such microscopic levels effects such as microwelding, galling, scoring and gouging of surfaces can all contribute in harmful ways to deteriorate and age all of these various networks of components. The synthesis of nanodiamonds is coming of age to deliver solutions to these issues in the form of nanodiamond lubricants.

Extending use cases even further there are also nanolube nanodiamond lubrication versions for handguns and other weapons. Which will effectively perform the same job of greatly reducing metal on metal contact and subsequent wear. This is really like the futuristic equivalent of WD-40 with potential applications on almost anything imaginable. I can see possible use in locks, hinges, trailers, clocks, knives, printers and so much more.
