Personal Memories of the 'muscle car', the Ford Mustang

Updated on December 3, 2017

The Beginning

A few years back I landed in the UAE for a job and decided I needed a fast moving powerful sports car. I opted for the Ford Mustang. The Mustang in English parlance means a wild horse. These flood the canyons in the USA and are a part of American folklore. In the early sixties, the American manufacturer Ford chose the name for their sports car, which to be exact was launched in 1962. The car has been having upgrades all along and even after five decades remains an iconic car. The car is also launched in India by Ford, but the convertible model is not available. Indian roads cannot handle the Mustang, but in the UAE the Mustang can be driven with ease and one can touch 150 mph easily on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai freeway. AS I was looking for a "muscle car", I opted for the Mustang and now its very much part of my life.

The Mustang

The Mustang is a low slung car and the one I have has a convertible roof that slides back, making for an exhilarating drive. It is a two-door model and being a sports car this has to be accepted. The Mustang is also known as a "muscle car", because of the power and acceleration its engine delivers. Presently the 6th generation model is on the road from 2015 and discerning buyers readily lap up the models.

The latest Mustang has three engine variations. The most powerful is the V-8 which develops 435 BHP. This is awesome power and the engine is very responsive. There is also a V-6 engine that churns out 330 BHP. Such power coupled with low drag coefficient makes the car a delight to drive and one can easily touch 175 MPH and not know the speed at which you are traveling. A V-4 engine is also available, but it's low on power.

I use the car frequently on the freeway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi and I can say its like driving nirvana. The car has an auto-retractable roof, climate control AC and a host of goodies with a small onboard computer that calculates mileage and its variations. You can get the exact figure how much gas the car has and how much distance it will take you forward. The car has 6 airbags and is very safe to drive, but all the same, when cruising at 150 MPH, it's better to follow the adage that "decretion is better than valor".

The Last Word

The car has excellent suspension and is available in AWD and automatic transmission models. This is mated to a 6-speed gearbox making driving a pleasure. Don't ask about fuel consumption, because such a question is an insult to a muscle car. But yet, I will say it gives 20/25 miles on a gallon. That's good.

The Mustang has earned a five-star rating from the Auto world and is a car that is part of American history. It's a pity that there are not many places you can drive the car in India. In the UAE, however, it's like the car has found its own niche. So friends in case you love racing cars, then the Mustang is the car to buy.

Thank you. Your comments are welcome. Ford tested an AWD in 1965 and then discontinued it. Its coming back

I remember the Mustang fondly. I never owned one but when I was in college I was one of a few students who were invited to a day long seminar that explained how this new car was developed and marketed. This was just about the time of its introduction.

      Nice article!

The Mustang looks excellent and you named it appropriately, the muscle car.

      The specifications sound very impressive.
