Tips to Save Gas

Save on Fuel Cost

Gas prices aren't likely to ever go low and stay there. Implementing tips to save gas is the answer to the rising fuel costs.

Gas Mileage Tips

These tips on driving more efficiently and maintaining your car will help you improve the fuel economy of your car or truck. Practicing fuel efficient driving techniques can improve the fuel economy of your car more than 10%.

Ways to Use Less Gas

According to Philip Reed and Mike Hudson at edmunds.com these are some tested techniques to help you use less gas when driving. These are methods that have been tested for good fuel efficiency.

  • stop driving aggressively and save as much as 37%

  • stop driving faster, drive slower, save up to 14%

  • utilize cruise control, up to 14%

  • don't idle car as much, save as much as 19%

When used the aforementioned suggestions can save drivers gas and money.

According to fueleconomy.gov "aggressive driving can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and by 5% around town."

Driver Feedback Devices

Driver feedback devices can support economical driving. The device can raise gas mileage by 10% says fueleconomy.gov. when used for saving fuel. This is the equivalent of saving .10 to .33 cents per gallon.

Overdrive Gears

Operate the overdrive gears because the motor speed goes down and uses less gas.

Other Gas Saving Tips

Another way is to watch the traffic ahead of you and gauge when you need to take your foot off of the gas pedal and not lose forward motion by braking and causing friction. You can't do this if you tailgate. Parking your car in a shady spot in the summer works the air conditioner less and saves gas.

One more tip is to take anything out of your car that doesn't need to be there as excess weight causes your car to use more gas.

More Gas Saving Ideas

  • if your car doesn't require high octane, don't buy it

  • topping off wastes gas through evaporation or spilling out

  • loose gas caps cause evaporation

  • tuneup saves 4%

  • recommended motor oil use saves 1 or 2%

Conclusion

Gas prices aren't in your favor, but using these fuel saving hints will help to beat back the cost of driving.
