Station Wagon Lovers

I recently used a Station Wagon, which unfortunately I had to sell. It was a 1997 Volvo V40 and I loved it. It made me develop a great deal of likeness for all station wagons. Now I consider it my first wagon “love” and I plan to buy it again as a collector car for the sort of impression it left with me for the period I had it. In truth, except that, “Station wagons have always been a quirky class of cars” as Trevor Dermody pointed out, there isn't much thing that attracted me to it or even making me want to drive another. Now, with the new trend in the auto industry a lot of them are no more on the street these days. This is the case, despite the fact that as some point “…about a fifth of all cars bought in the US were station wagons”.

For the reason that I am now drawn to them, and the fact that you run it into them only once in a while now, I became fascinated with those who drive them. In this, I kept asking myself: Is there anything peculiar about their drivers? Or do the few who still choose them, do so because they are cheaper than similar sedans? Or are there other factors why “…wagons appeal to a select group of car guys and gals” really? These questions keeps coming up in my mind, each time I see one and finally, I decided to attempt finding answers to them.


Interestingly in my first search for “station wagon lovers” on google, I discovered there were actually many “fraternity and sorority” of “station wagon enthusiast [and] organizations, [like] the American Station Wagon Owners Association and the International Station Wagon Club…”. Very active organizations, Ronnie Schreiber mentioned were obvious cooperating partners in the making of the 2012, “Baby, I’m So Gone: Wagonmasters, a Documentary About Station Wagons and the People Who Love Them”.

Surprisingly (at least to me ignorant self) also , there is even a Facebook, “I Love station Wagon” community page. With a description that reads: “Ok Wagon Lovers! Show your pride (or your mental instability—however the world sees it). “Post a photo of the station wagon you love (or want to love). If the world wants to run around in SUVs— that’s okay. But for a few of us only a wagon will do. So grab your keyboards, scan your hard drives, adjust your plastic pocket pencil holders and let the world know! WE LOVE WAGONS!!”. Before I liked the page though, there were only 135 likes, not minding it appeared to have been up since 2011.

I am sure there may be other possible reasons why they have such a low number of likes, but it could also be explained by the fact that “The wagon world is indeed a small world”. Since according to Jim Motavalli, a self proclaimed station wagon junkie “Wagons are in the news these days because just like convertible (and dinosaurs), they’re going through a die-off”. But, in as much as this situation is obvious, some members of this world are still convinced “Wagons won't really “die”—they’ll always have a diehard following, and could be revived at any time”.

As a result of this die-off situation, there is also a low interest in its subject. So, in the course of my attempt to search for related materials, there wasn't much available reads. But, with the few resources I was able to access, I discovered the following about love for station wagons:

One, there is a lake of write-ups that speak directly about wagon drivers and the possible link between their personalities and the fact that they choose to drive wagon at this day and age. If there were such resources available, they would have helped me understand if these set of people have a peculiar individual personalities or not. Consequently, it is my solemn opinion that there is need for a study focused on identifying what about the personality traits of those who still choose to drive wagon even when there are more recent options like the SUVs and crossovers that surmount them and what were once thought made them superior.


Two, love for station wagons doesn't have much to or even nothing do with cost as they aren’t always cheaper than sedans. For instance, Jens Meiners, while writing about “2013 BMW 3-series Sports Wagon,” noted “When it comes to the U.S., the 3-series wagon should cost about $2000 more than a similarly equipped sedan”.

Three, it kinda had more to do with some other factors like:

  • The feeling that they looks cool and hot; particular those its traditional wood trim, fabrics and its long roofs general outlook.
  • The appreciation of the fact that they drive like cars and still have space to contain stuffs at the same time with their larger cargo space when compared to regular sedans.
  • The failing in unbroken love with wagons as kids because mom, dad, grandparents, great aunties, aunties or uncles had them. Like Glenbrook who said: “In 1973, my parents purchased a brand new Dodge Coronet Crestwood station wagon with a 360 4 barrel engine and an automatic transmission”. And till date, he still professes his likeness for them and even wrote a piece captioned: “Classic and Vintage Station Wagons - Why They're Awesome, Why You Want One, and Where to Find Them” for HubPages.
  • The spending of much of their “youth in the “way back” of station wagon”. For 54belair, a member in it all got settled “as a little kid in Dad's '57, '59, and '63 Ford Country Squires and as a teen learning about girls in the '69 Chevy Kingswood Estate, I now enjoy collecting die cast wagons” according to like.
  • The fact of living through the Wagon craze era; its golden age. When it was celebrated with words like these: “The wagon is a workhouse for the do-it-yourself suburbanite...the wagon is a bedroom...the wagon is a kitchen...the wagon is a traveling nursery...the wagon is a rolling recreation device...the wagon is an entire mobile home...All these uses add up to something more than transportation, convenience or utility,” words of Greg Beato as quoted by Jim Motavalli.
  • The likeness for them because it takes them back to when time was simpler; gas was cheaper; families still had time to spend together and there was less things to worry about.


Finally, in recognition of the sparse nature of the factors afore listed as possible reasons why some still salivate for station wagon (classical or modern), continues to hold unto the conviction: “…[that] any station wagon is better than a non-wagon…,” with the car still attracting new lovers like me. I will continue to update the list as new details becomes available, especially from readers comments. This will help to include the perception of as many wagon aficionados as is possible.
