Tamper Resistant Star screwdriver – Tamper Proof screw driver bits

Updated on December 18, 2015

The right tools - has this happened to you?

Have you ever been in the middle of a do it yourself repair job and found out that you needed a tool that you don’t have? This happened to me recently.

I was in the middle of replacing the mass airflow sensor on my 2003 Ford Van when I found that I needed a special star shaped screwdriver head. I've run into a similar situation previously and I have a set of star shaped driver heads, but they wouldn't work on this type of screw. This one was unlike anything that i had worked with before. Here I thought that I was all set but came up wanting for an additional tool.

A little research on my part ended up providing me with what I needed. Come to find out there is something called a tamper resistant style of star screw head. I didn’t know something like that even existed before this repair job. These are apparently being used frequently in the automotive industry from what I have learned. Perhaps you have run into this same situation also. If so, then you're in the right place!

Tamper Proof screw driver bit

If you're not sure what a tamper resistant screw driver head looks like then take a look at the picture to the right. If you're like I was before this repair, then you might not have a clue what I'm trying to describe.

This driver works with a unique screw head which has a little raised dimple in the center. That raised dimple fits up into the recess in the center of this driver head. The star drivers that I already had in my tool box didn't have the hollow tip. That hollow tip is what makes this screw and driver into the "tamper resistant" variety. You can see a picture of the head of the screw here in this article as well.

Where can I find them?

AutoZone carries a thirteen piece set of tamper resistant bits like the one pictured above for $14.99. You can order one online.

Another alternative is to get a set from Amazon.com. I have found that I can generally get really great products from Amazon when I know what I'm looking for. Check out the 101 pc set shown below.

Thank you very much. I'm having to replace the very same thing in my Chevy Impala SS!
