Tesla Presented The First Futuristic-Looking Electric Truck
At the launch event, in Los Angeles, Tesla Executive Director, Elon Musk, said the truck, which looks like a true armored vehicle, will have a starting price of $39,900 and a maximum autonomy of 400 km. The most expensive model, at $69,900, has an autonomy of over 800 kilometers.
"We need sustainable energy now. If we do not have an electric pickup truck we can't solve this. The first 3 vehicles which are sold in America are trucks. To solve the problem of sustainable energy, we must have a truck." said Musk.
Mass production is expected to start by the end of 2021. Big trucks represent about 14.4% of total sales of new cars in the United States in the first 10 months of this year, vehicles that sell above the price of Tesla cars, somewhere around $50,000.
The truck presented by Elon Musk, marks the first foray of Tesla, whose Model 3 sedan is the world's best-selling electric car, in a market dominated by the giants Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM) and the Fiat Chrysler SUVs.
Entering on trucks market is a huge opportunity for Tesla and a possible paradigm shift if the new vehicle is adopted by US consumers. It also symbolizes the improvement of battery manufacturing technologies, because the autonomy increases with the weight of the vehicle.
Elon Musk said in a tweet posted before the launch that the truck's angular, stainless steel design was partial influenced by James Bond's car from the movie "The Spy Who Loved Me" from the 1970s, a car that turned into a submarine.
"It looks like a truck version of DeLorean from Back to the Future." commented one guest.
The windows of the truck were broken during a demonstration on stage that had to show how difficult they were to break, and Musk was heard swearing before joking that "there is still room for improvement."
