Top 10: Muscle Cars - Examples Of Why Hybrids Are Wussies

Introduction

"Muscle car" is a term that's been thrown around for years now, sometimes correctly, sometimes not. For this Top 10, were the original term for the 60's and 70's cars that have been popular for 40 years now.

These mid sized cars were usually 2 door, front engine, rear wheel drive machines. The engines were usually huge and put out serious power for their relatively low purchase price.Simple really.

Sadly though, muscles cars died out in the early 70's due to the introduction of Unleaded gas. The change in fuel dropped horsepower outputs and people just stopped buying them. The good news of course, is you can buy one of these and put a modern unleaded engine in, and produce upwards of 1000bhp should you choose (and of course have the money) and still use it as a streetcar.

The Skylark GS (Gran Sport) appeared back in 1965 when Buick decided it was a good idea to put a 402ci (6.5li) V8 in the front. They were right of course! It was a success for Buick and carried on into the early 70's with the GSX, a 454ci (7.5li) engine developing over 400bhp and 500lb.ft torque!

Oldsmobile were the second company to offer up a massive engine on a mid sized platform. In the case of the 442, it was a 310bhp 330ci (5.4li) V8 which was a Police spec engine. The 442 came from the name 4-4-2, referring to the 4 barrel carb, 4 speed box and twin exhaust system. It was also known for it's good handling, which is rare for muscle cars.

This was the response to sister company Pontiac's GTO. The normal SS only had 300bhp, so this SS model was upped to a more respectable 375bhp 402ci (6.5li) V8. Sadly, it was known to be terrible under breaking and didn't like going round corners, to much extra weight in the front with that massive engine. Over the next few years, the suspension and brakes were tweaked to massively improve this. In 1970 the ultimate SS came out, the 427ci (7.0li) 450bhp and 500lb/ft version.

The late comer to the muscle car party. After the success of the Charger, Dodge released the slightly larger Challenger R/T (Road and Track) with either a 427ci (7.0li) Hemi with 425bhp, or a 440ci (7.4li) producing 390bhp, the Hemi was the one to go for of course. This has also just had a 2008 revival with a modern day Challenger SRT-8 launching. We all wish they'd make the Challenger SRT-10 though.

The name for this car cost $50,000, which in the 60's was a lot of money. Plymouth bought permission from Warner Bros to use the Roadrunner name to help people know it was fast. It was, 14 second quarter mile for $4000 is very cheap! There was a 335bhp 385ci (6.3li) or the bigger 425bhb 427ci (7.0li) V8 options, both were fast and popular.

In 1964, Pontiac released the GTO which is regarded at the first Muscle Car. Pontiac took a 389ci (6.3li) for a bigger car, and replaced the 326ci (5.3li) in the tempest, and thus the GTO and muscle cars were born. Interestingly, one of the men behind the GTO was John Delorean, who later formed and designed the Delorean DMC12 of Back to the Future fame.

In 1966, GM had to watch the Mustang come out, and sell, oh did it sell. It's to this day one of the fastest selling cars, and the fastest selling sports car. To respond, the year after they released the Camaro. The Best of the early models was the Z28. A small 300ci (4.9li) v8 which was race prepped to 400bhp was the engine to go for, if very hard. The SS got the 427ci (7.0li) 425bhp engine, which was easier to get, and still awesome.

The Mustang is the biggest selling, which also makes it the most common and therefore not the best. This particular model was made famous by one of the greatest car chases of all time in Bullitt. The GT390 was a 427ci (7.0li) 390bhp V8, not the biggest engine, but 30bhp more! It was and is a legend car.

The 'Cuda was actually released before the Mustang, but due to the popularity of the Mustang, and the Barracuda's underpowered engines, it almost bombed. However, in 1970 it got a restyle, and a new range of engines, the Hemi 'Cuda was born. The Hemi being a 427ci (7.0li) 425bhp monster.

The daddy of muscle cars. The 69 R/T is a legend car that many around the world dream of owning. Yes, being the General Lee in The Dukes Of Hazard, and also being the baddy car in Bullitt helped a lot. But look at it, it was always going to do well. It's evil, especially in black. The original Hemi was rated at 425bhp, but it was more like 500bhp! It's a shame modern day car makers don't do it that way! The R/T was slightly less powerful, but was massivly more reliable which meant it could offer up a 5 year warrenty.

      GTO - known as the goat. It's always stuck with it, because of the three shared letters, and the unique headlamps of the vehicle.

      Great Hub! Brings back memories of my non muscle 1967 Chevy Chevelle Malibu with a roaring 283 V8. I used to invert the air filter cover to make it sound mean! I also had a 1969 convertible Mustand with a stock 302. That car was seriously fast but had manual everything including windows and steering. I rented it out to the movie studios for a Robert Townsend film and they ended up scratching so bad that they had to repaint it.

      Yeah absolutely right6 about the classic cars they are still having a different place in our heart & that is the reason they are some car lovers who like to have their oldie ones still in their garage !I am having the 1971 dodge challenger & i am very happy with it cause i have modified it's engine & placed the turbocharger in it n& because of that My Dodge still shows the anger to other cars sometimes even to me by showing it's shiny xenon headlights!I LOVE MY DODGE CHALLENGER!Nice HUB!ONE OF THE BEST IN MY POINT OF VIEW!

      Great cars, some good info too. Only one thing wrong, the mustang actually came out half way through 1964, not in 1966. So ussually it's refered to the the 64 and a half mustang. But no complaints here. Bet it took a while to decide what cars would be on the list. There's a lot of good muscle cars to choose from.

      I remember seeing the showroom version of the one with the giant spoiler that killed on the stock car tracks for a short while.

      The maker of the Hi-Pa Drive pancake electric motors put together a prototype mini with a 160 hp motor inside of each wheel the little 640 hp beast does 0 - 60 in 4 secs and 150 mph. There's a 33 lb gas motor in the back to charge it on long trips.

      The German performance car tuners Brabus are putting fake engine sounds into electric cars, you can have your electric Smart Car make a fake V8 sound as a pedestrian warning.

      What about the Dodge Charger Daytona's that could go 195 plus mph? They were 18 feet long but still could go that fast. They also had only .25 drag, but were still 18 feet long. If they did not have the three foot spoiler on the back to keep it on the ground, they say it would only have .12 drag. AMAZING!!!

      I am a huge fan of classic muscle cars, prefer them over any other type of cars. In this age and time they are trying to bring them back, without any success to much.

      So far, the mustang and the Challenger is the only 2 who deserve the name of their ancestors. The camaro looks good and all, but I am still debating that one.

      The 2010 charger seems promising, at least it will be a two door this time, but the concept of it needs a lot of work to honor the charger family.

      Voted for the 66 Chevelle but I would prefer the 65 Chevelle Malibu, its rarity and its innovations for the time makes it such a find, only 60 -70 left in good condition.

      Wow, what memories. I agree with the majority of the selection. But the missed sleeper/muscle cars were maybe overlooked because of year, hp rated by factory vs. true rating, or, maybe you just did not like. Here are 2 that should have been included into your muscle car selection:

      1) 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 with the 455. Dealers listed the stage 1 for insurance purpose at 360hp, but it was estimated that the 455 created more along the lines of 420hp plus. Also creating 500 plus pound feet of torque. Wikipedia will verify this.

      2) The Pontiac 73 455 SD-Ho Trans Am. Very few produced and even fewer remain. The same thing applied to this beast. To meet insurance criteria of the day, GM placed estimated Hp rating and emission smog testing to comply with Federal laws. Anyone who ones a 73 T/A with the 455SD/HO option will tell you this is a crock of %^&$. This car is capable of turning the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds. Remove the smog system, open the air intake, increase the fuel consumption and you have just begun to see what the 455 was meant to do.

      Awesome hub! Always love to see people pay respect to the "classics with bite"! Two quick corrections, the Mustang was actually released in 64 1/2, not 66. And it was actually the oil embargo in 1973 that "killed" the muscle cars. Gas prices shot up to a whopping $0.30 a gallon.

      Leaded fuels weren't actually completely phased out until the 80's. But an older "leaded fuel" engine will actually run fine, for the most part, on newer unleaded fuel. The lead did have a "lubricating" effect, but most newer fuels contain additives that do the same thing.

      Personally, the one change I would make on your list would have to be swapping out the '68 Mustang for a '69 Boss 429, quite possibly the world's sexiest car (IMHO).

      Another interesting point to note... while your stated H.P. numbers might be "statistically correct", in reality most of these cars were actually putting out anywhere from 50-150 more horsepower than they were rated at! They were intentionally "under-rated" to keep insurance prices down, lol.

      How much fun would it be if auto-makers still had that kind of a mentality (and gas prices were still $.30 a gallon)?

      Good post. I love old cars. Used to ride with my buddy through the quarter mile every morning before we went to school. I love ALL old cars, but am especially fond of Mopars. Have had a 69 Roadrunner for forty years. (About to tell my age.) We drag raced it, road raced it, and now show it. I saw an error on the CI of the Mopars. There was baby big block (383 ci)or big block (440ci) or (426ci HEMI)No one at any time EVER called them 427ci or 385 ci. They were 383ci with 335hp, 440ci with 375hp, and the bad boy 426ci with 425hp. But in all reality the 426 had much more power. And for all that would like to know how much, a friend of mine said he ran around with a boy that had a hemi Mopar in high school. Take notice RICE BURNERS. He said that the boy could shift out of third at 125 MPH, and the car would fish tail. He said that he had never road in or drove a car like that ever. Just wanted to correct the mistake.

      69 Charger baby, I finished restomodding one two years ago, it's got a bored out 440, 528 cubes right now, six pack induction, edelbrock performer rpm cam and heads, 6 spd Tremec t56, putting 760, 850ft/lbs to the rear wheels... Had her at 210 on the freeway a couple times.... Oh and one thing, it was a 426 Hemi, not a 427.... But otherwise great job

      There are so many factual fallacies and inaccuracies in this article, I don't even know where to begin. But I'll try;

      1. Unleaded gas DID NOT kill the muscle car (nor do you need to swap a new engine into a classic muscle car to get more BHP [and you WILL NOT get 1000+ BHP by simply swapping a new engine that runs on unleaded]), it was a combination of rising oil prices (which in turn affected gas prices), the risk associated with stock cars that handled rather poorly, yet produced upwards of 500 HP, that were marketed to younger customers and finally, the hehty premiums insurance companies slapped on muscle cars with monstrous engines.

      2. The Challenger IS NOT slightly larger then the Charger, but the exact opposite!

      3. This is debatable, but the Challenger, Camaro and Mustang are not strictly muscle cars, but in fact pony cars.

      4. You write "The R/T was slightly less powerful but was massivly more reliable" when mentioning the 426 Hemi. You seem to be mixing the engines though, since the true statement would be "The 440 was slightly less powerful, but was massivly more reliable than the 426 Hemi", since R/T is the name of the performance package. A Dodge Charger R/T could be had with either the 440 Magnum or 426 Hemi.

      Though choosing the Charger as number one proves you have at least some understanding of true muscle cars. Kudos for that!

      Well, I had a '67 GTO, brand new after discharge from the Army. I bought a dark blue, 400cu in, 335hp version, with 3:55 gears. Always got beat by the 396 and 427 Chevelles though and even a Runner now and then. Should have optioned mine up to the 360hp Tri-power, with 4:11 rear gears. Might have come closer to the Chevelles at stoplights. I still miss the car though. Paid about $3200 for it brand new, sold it for $700 on a trade for a '70 Chev wagon, 400 small block to haul around play pens and baby food chairs. What a joke.

      Who ever wrote is an idiot with no muscle car knowledge first the buick engine size is 455 not 454. The 66' chevelle came wih a 396 not a 4402. Thrhe dodge hemi was 426 not a 427 as the 383 not a385. The camro z-28 came with a 302 not 300. The ford mustang gt 390 came with a 390 not a 427. And finaly mustangs, cudas, challengers, and camaros where pony cars.

      I had oldsmobiles for 50 years and never never lost a race. I beat chevy's fords mopars in my class. you guy's don't know much about BIG BAD OLDS. My son has a 68 442 with a 455ci & 500 hp & loves to race chevy's fords & mopars. Take that to the bank.

      My 1966 442 in 1966 was king I put in Mickey Thompson dual 4's and sucked GTO's & Z-28's up my exhaust.. I am buying up all the 1966 442's I can find.

      the SS camaro did not come with the 7 liter, and the chevelle didn't have a 402, and the oldsmobile 442 had a 400 in 1969 not the 340, please redo your research

      You sir are an idiot. You got most of you displacements wrong to begin with. The 1967/68 GT and GTA 390 had a ford 390 F.E. which had 300 to 330 hp. Plus the 1969 Camaro S.S. had a 350 or 396 c.i. engine producing 325 to 375 hp. the only Camaros that had the 427c.i. engines were the C.O.P.O., Yenko and the ZL1. Case and point.

      Firstly it should be #1, but the fact that the 1970 Chevelle SS/LS6 isn't even on the list should be grounds for execution! 454/450 hp and a few models came with the 4 spd muncie rockcrusher and a 4:10 rear end which pushed 13.12 @ 107 MPH on factory rubber. 69 charger ran 13.5 and 70 cuda ran 13.9

      I had a1970 Camaro SS 350 back in the day,it came from the factory with oversized intake & exhaust ports,it was fast,0-60 in 4 sec it had 300 hp and 380 feet pounds of torque. That power broke two motor mounts and a trans mount,wish I had it today,I traded it in for a 1976 455 Trans-Am 4 speed. I am now have a 1979 Trans-Am with a 429 ci pushing 660 up

      too many false statements posted;and way too many cars left off the list.lets start with ford; 1963 galaxies with 427 FE side oilers that came in many configurations low risers, med risers,high risers,tunnel ports,and the infamous 427 s.o.h.c engine, these were engines that ford put into many of their cars, galaxies, falcons,fairlanes,starliners just to name a few,also left off the list were shelby mustangs from 1965 thru 1969, their were also mach 1s with 428 cobra jets. 3 years of the bosses 69,70,and 71 these mustangs had very radical smallblock 302, a large 429 hemi ( way to small of a cam) and probably the best of the time 1971 boss 351? and how could you possibly leave 427 cobra roadster, i mean if your looking for the baddest 2 door, big block, light weight,with an american muscle car engine. the cobra is the ultimate???~!!!! there are also mercury cougars 2 years of the eliminator with any engine size you may want 302 boss 351 cleveland,and or windsor,390 gt, 427s,428, and if you wanted you could have a boss 429 hemi? all this in a 69 thru 70 cougar eliminator, and one cougar the dan gurnney special. enough about fords and i am sure i might have left some out. GM where do i begin the original GTO 389 3 duces in a 1964 pontiac tempest body,1964 ss malibus with L78 package(375 h.p.396 cid) in another very lightweight 2 door. their were also yenkos chevells,copo camaros,w 30 olds 442 with 455 cid and as one blogger mentioned all the tran ams, and lets not forget 1963 bubble top impala ss 409s, and many more that i am sure i have forgotten in the GM arena of automotive performance. i would mention mopar but it seems too dominate the article.thank you for your article even if it is not very accurate.

      My heart pounds every time i see a 66 GTO. The tail light are even pretty on them. I remember 20 years ago you could have bought one for 15 grand. Now they are wayyyy out of my league.

      NOTE: the cars that were left off the Top 10 Are.....Drumroll please, 1966 Shelby Cobra with 427 side oiler, 1966-67 Corvette with 427 3x2, 1971 Buick GSX Stage 1, Which is the most powerful musclecar with its 455 at 550lb/ft torque..low 12's were normal for this Buick!.....1969 AMC Hurst SCRAMBLER, Yenko and COPO camaros and Novas.........Better get a heads up on all the flavors of the musclecar bloodline buddy!

      btw the 69' roadrunner in your article is actually an M code car which was a 1/2 year model that came equip with the 440 with 6bbl carb under rated at 390hp. The engine was too tall to fit under the normal hoods so they had to make a fiberglass lift off hood as seen in the picture. They were really drag cars you could buy and drive straight to the track without needing to do a single mod to them. (they came with no hub caps, 4:10 dana rear, etc.) One of the fastest muscle cars ever built

      i have to agree with user Scott that poster 5 months ago... i own a 71 olds 455 engine from a 71 olds 442.... the crappy 300 horse engine you have listed for it is a piece of crap no one wanted- 442 was known for its 455 option... that's why it was fast... not the little cheap engine it came stock with.... my '71 455 engine will dominate!
